2. What Laser Letterhead Plus, Version 3.5 Does:
==============================================================================
This program is an easy to use laser printing program that will let you
create letterhead stationery complete with logos and graphics and
matching envelopes. You may use Laser Letterhead plus as a stand-alone
program, or you may select to use it in combination with TextWriter.
The TextWriter module is a compact Dos-based word processor made to work
in a unique way with Laser Letterhead plus. You may optionally use Text-
Writer to write quick documents that would take much longer with a conven-
tional word processor. It is an easy but fast way to write a document,
print it with letterhead, logo, and watermark, and then immediately print
an envelope with the address you had placed on the document. TextWriter
will take you directly to the letterhead module to select the letterhead,
and then to the envelope module to print the envelope. The learning curve
is very short with TextWriter, with easy on-screen menu selections.
TextWriter keeps all documents in one file for fast access and retrieval,
or documents may be imported or exported in ascii format to and from other
word processors and programs. You may instantly jump from first to last
document, or any in between by pressing a key. It is possible to find a
single document, if only you remember just one word in it. You many insert
often used macro phrases into any document, replace any word/phrase with
another, or output directly to your laser printer without printing a
letterhead. Cut and paste to the clipboard is also available.
When you register Laser Letterhead plus, you will also obtain a 90,000
word Spell Checker for TextWriter and the ability to create return
address labels for parcels. Other database utilities and laser printer
and test programs are included. Also, you will receive a free customized
PCX letterhead, logo, and watermark.
BatchMailer is a module intended for selective mass printing of envelopes
from the Address list. It located within the Envelope module and offers
superior control over your laser printer.
The program is made to use with Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers or
compatibles. This includes ALL Hewlett-Packard printers except the orig-
inal LaserJet Model. Supported models are the LaserJet Plus, LaserJet 500
plus, LaserJet 2000, all Series II models, Series IID, Series IIP, Laser-
Jet III, IIIP, IIID, and IIIsi.
Any closely compatible laser printer using Level 4 page formatting
feature, HP Printer Command Language (PCL) may use Laser Letterhead Plus.
Version 3.5 avoids using PCL Level V (other than feed tray commands),
so that the program will be backward compatible with almost all Laser
Printers on the market today and forward compatible with any new model
laser that uses the same Level 4 Printer Command Language.
Laser Letterhead plus will not work with DeskJet printers because they
do not utilize PCL Level 4 page formatting printer commands.
~
Page 2
If you are using a non-Hewlett-Packard Laser Printer, it must be set in
HP LaserJet compatibility mode. Consult your printer's manual on how
this is accomplished.
PCX images may be used for letterheads, or smaller images inserted into
letterhead designs. This includes any image in PCX bitmap format. This may
be for a logo, but ANY PCX image file or PCX clip-art will work. A light
image or what is termed a "watermark" may also be employed. This PCX image
of 1% to 5% density of the normal image, forms a background that permits
text or the body of a document to be placed over it. If watermarks are not
used, any PCX image, including clip-art, may be used in this position, and
placed anywhere on the page. A watermark is also included at no charge
when this product is registered. PCX images created in paint or drawing
programs also work nicely with Laser Letterhead plus.
Every document format and the envelope, permits the use of a "slogan". A
slogan is a short phrase or sentence of 50 characters that may be placed
anywhere on the page or envelope. The slogan may be boxed in, shaded,
or framed with a graphic fill pattern. This is a process that is created
by your laser printer and requires no images or extra memory. A separate
slogan is used for the document and for the envelope.
Envelopes as large as 8.5" x 14" may be printed with a return and mailing
address that matches the letterhead stationery. A database file of mailing
addresses is maintained. An address may selected and placed on an envelope
with little effort.
Every letterhead is capable of producing two variations: a personal name
version or business version. There are 3 types of letterheads:
1. A REGULAR (automated) Letterhead where you merely enter the necessary
information in SetUp and the design is computer created for a centered or
left-justified letterhead. A PCX logo, a watermark, and a slogan may be
positioned anywhere on the page, if desired.
2. A SPECIALLY DESIGNED (partially automated) Letterhead, that permits
the user to move the letterhead text horizontally, and position two PCX
logos, a watermark image, and a slogan anywhere on the page. If you have
limited laser printer RAM and wish to create letterheads with PCX images,
this is your best selection. You may use a logo of limited size and
combine it with soft fonts if you have only 512K of laser RAM. Some PCX
images require more RAM in your printer than your soft fonts.
The user may select the margin position for the letterhead text. A
lightly printed PCX watermark image may be added and as well as a slogan.
Graphical fill patterns may be used for the baseline and around the
slogan.
A baseline is usually a line underneath the letterhead text. This can
be drastically changed with a laser printer to a double line, dotted
line, heavy black line, gray-shaded bar that may be framed and non-shaded
(white), or gray-shaded up to solid black. It may also be a patterned
filled bar with up to 6 different patterns set within a frame or left
unframed.
~
Page 3
The baseline may be rotated to an upright position, and placed on the
left margin or anywhere else on the page. All positions are in inches
from the top and left margins and may be located accurately down to 1/1000
of an inch.
3. A ONLY LOGO Letterhead utilizes a PCX image for the entire letterhead.
This will permit landscape (vertical) printing down the side of the page
or in a circle or anything else that may be created with a PCX image. The
ONLY LOGO Letterhead also supports two additional PCX images, a watermark
image, and a slogan. All PCX image printing is programmed in fast
assembler language that makes images print almost as rapidly as plain
text. A large watermark image may require a longer time.
This letterhead may be set up in a draw or paint program utilizing text
and PCX images as well as the available tools for creating various
effects such as shading and fountains. Other PCX images or clip-art may
be employed to create separate or combined images. A name and title and
the current date may be incorporated into the letterhead or placed
anywhere on the page. This is a print time option. A PCX letterhead image,
a text-based logo, and a watermark are available at no extra charge with
your registration.
You will need up to a megabyte of RAM in your laser for fonts and the
Only Logo letterhead image. It is unlikely that you will be able to print
the watermark unless you have up to 2 megabytes of laser RAM installed.
If you are using large images, make sure you have enough RAM.
You will also need PCL bitmap soft fonts to download to your HP or
compatible printer. PostScript Outline fonts or scalable fonts will not
work. PCL bitmap fonts are available from your shareware distributor at
very low cost, from discount mail order houses (Bitstream), or direct.
An example of a direct seller is Eagle Systems, PO Box 502, Moorpark,
CA 93021 (805) 529-6992. Eagle Laser FontPacks are of excellent quality.
510K of actual free DOS Memory and a Hard Disk with 960K of disk space
are needed to install the Shareware Edition of Laser Letterhead plus.
Free memory available and disk space may be obtained by running a DOS
CHKDSK command at the system prompt of your hard disk. The "bytes
available on disk" should be at least 960,000 bytes to hold the program
files plus about 600,000 bytes to execute the program (a temporary
directory is created if the program cannot use enough extended or
expanded memory - it is deleted when you exit the program). This will
total about 1,600,000 bytes of disk space.
Free memory is indicated in CHKDSK by the last line, "bytes free". This
should be at least 509,808 bytes. This is your computer ram memory that
is available after it is up and running. If you have DOS 5.0 or DR DOS 6.0
or higher, this should be no problem. If you are using a DOS version less
than the above, you may have to free up more memory by not running TSR
programs or whatever causes you to have less than 510 bytes free.
-> NO SOFT FONTS ARE INCLUDED ON THE SHAREWARE DISKS. THE FONTS IN
THE SETUP PROGRAM DO NOT EXIST. THEY ARE ENTRIES USED AS EXAMPLES!

==============================================================================
3. How the program Memory Manager works...
==============================================================================
Several enhancements have been added to the program to speed it up and
handle its large size as well as PCX images. Image files are notoriously
slow in printing. These routines have been optimized and are written in
fast assembler language. Although they are about the size of a font file,
it takes only a fraction of the time to manipulate and download them.
In addition, extended and/or expanded memory are used to boost all
routines into memory, making them available in an instant. The total
program, including all modules, encompass' over a megabyte of diskspace.
Above 640K, large sections of the program are swapped in and out of
expanded or extended memory (or both, if available). After one pass
through your laser printer, you will notice a speed-up for subsequent
passes. All Memory Manager routines are also programmed in fast assembler
language to enhance their execution speed.
The built in Memory Manager negotiates for memory upon start-up of the
program and attempts to make its best deal with whatever memory drivers
you have installed. Many computers have extended memory that is not
available and never used by other programs. The Memory Manager will go
after it and use it if you permit it to do so (in SetUp).
It will search for HIMEM.SYS and utilize memory that is generally not
available. It will seek QEMM.SYS, EMM386.SYS, 386MAX.SYS, or any other
drivers to secure what is needed. Indicators at the bottom of the Main
Menu will show how much extended and/or expanded memory is being utilized.
Since all memory is returned after the program is through using it, the
amount shown at the Main Menu may be misleading. A trip to the Utility
Menu or to print envelopes will usually cause about 512K to be swapped
into memory.
If all fails, then it will settle for writing to the disk. A subdirectory
is created off the current directory upon startup in the event your
installed memory, if any, is not sufficient for the needs of the program.
Writing to the disk is not fast, but it creates enough swapping room
to execute a large complex program.
At times you will notice messages quickly appearing at the top of the
monitor screen. This generally informs you of what is being done. If a
backup directory has to be created quickly, such a message will occur.
When the program is completed it returns all memory and erases the
temporary disk directories, leaving everything as it was when it started.
You have the option of erasing the fonts from your laser printer's RAM,
or leaving them installed. The PCX files are erased without disturbing
the font files.
NOTE: If DOS 5.0 is installed, HIMEM SYS in the Config.sys file must have
the /int15=512 switch added if you want to access extended memory:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS/int15=512

==============================================================================
4. What you need to use Laser Letterhead Plus...
==============================================================================
NOTE: NO SOFT FONTS ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS SOFTWARE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO
OPERATE LASER LETTERHEAD PLUS WITHOUT PCL BITMAP SOFT FONTS. OUTLINE FONTS
OR SCREEN FONTS WILL NOT WORK. DOWNLOADABLE PCL BITMAP FONTS MAY BE
OBTAINED AT LOW COST FROM YOUR SHAREWARE DEALER OR DOWNLOADED FROM A BBS.
THE FONTS ENTERED IN SETUP ARE EXAMPLES AND DO NOT EXIST ON THE SHAREWARE
DISKS. CALL 813-544-0212 IF YOU NEED HELP OBTAINING PCL BITMAP SOFT FONTS.
1. An IBM compatible computer with a hard disk and 640K of RAM. 510K of
RAM must be free to run LLHP. 960K of disk space are needed to install
the files. The best performance is achieved by "AT" type 286, 386, 486
or higher computers because of their memory handling abilities and speed.
2. Operating system: MS DOS 3.0 or higher. The program is designed to be
used with most up-to-date systems that utilize a megabyte or more of RAM
and a memory manager. Extended and/or expanded memory may be utilized.
Laser Letterhead plus supports the HIMEM.SYS driver and can access its
extended memory. Expanded memory drivers such as Quarterdeck's QEMM
or 386MAX are used as well. If you have any memory driver which conforms
to LIM (Lotus, Intel, Microsoft) specifications 3.2 and up, the Laser
Letterhead plus Memory Manager will recognize it and use it to its
fullest extent. Laser Letterhead plus works best with DOS 5.0 or higher
or with DR DOS 6.0 or higher. 510K of free RAM is necessary to run LLHP.
The program is text based requiring only menu selections, so it will
work with any text or graphics video cards and monitors. For the vision
impaired, a large font screen driver is available with the registration.
3. A Hewlett-Packard or Compatible Laser Printer: The software is
compatible with all Hewlett-Packard Laser printers except the original
Laserjet Model. The new LaserJet Series III, IIIP, IIID, and IIIsi work
exceptionally well. All compatibles to HP Series II will work fine.
4a. Computer RAM memory requirements: 640K RAM. Disk Space: The program
requires over a megabyte of disk space. With soft fonts and PCX files,
almost 2 megabytes of a hard disk is utilized. If you have a expanded or
extended RAM and a memory manager such as HIMEM.SYS or QEM386 with at
least a megabyte of memory, you will need no additional disk space.
Otherwise, the program may have to create over 600K on the disk for
temporary file swapping.
4b.Laser Printer RAM requirements: just 512K of RAM to print letterhead
text using soft fonts. If you are using the Only Logo selection you will
need up to 1 megabyte for the PCX images. If you want to print watermarks
with PCX Letterheads, at least 2 megabytes of laser RAM is needed.
5. A SET OF FONTS: PCL Bitmap Soft fonts or cartridge or combined. Ideally
ranging from 8 to 25 points. NO FONTS ARE INCLUDED. Scalable or Outline
fonts cannot be used.
6. PCX image files: Upon registration you will receive the Basic Custom-
izing PCX Pak. You may select, at no additional cost, a PCX Only Logo
Letterhead, along with a text-base logo, and a PCX watermark that will
be customized to you or your business. You may select these from a wide
selection of designs. See the Registration Form for this information.

==============================================================================
5. HOW TO BEGIN
==============================================================================
THE MOST IMPORTANT STATEMENTS IN THIS HANDBOOK ARE RIGHT HERE
LASER LETTERHEAD plus was written, planned, and programmed so you can
get up and running as easily as possible. The key for using this program
skillfully lies in how you load the SetUp programs and the way options
are arranged. Get to know the SetUp programs well, and you will be able
to manipulate and vary your output with ease. Printing the actual
document is only a matter of answering questions concerning which letter-
head setup you want and what options to print. After you make the
selections, and the program goes to work. It is straightforward and clear.
The Quick Start instructions will show you how to place your fonts into
the SetUp program, and the basic selections you may print. The rest is up
to you. After completing Quick Start, replace the demo data in Basic
SetUp Screen #1, with your own information. When it is convenient for
you, go through all the SetUp Screens with the manual handy, make
selections, and arrange your letterheads. For now, however, attempt only
to become acquainted with the program through Quick Start. The program
has been pre-setup and is ready.
It is important that you start printing something, even if it is about
fictitious aeroplanes and zeppelins and someone named Johnathan Quimbly
Flyblind. See how this company setup everything, and then consider how
you would do it, given the resources of Laser Letterhead plus. If you
believe the logos are too gaudy, or the letterheads improper, then
think how you would go about it.
Sit down with a pencil and sketch out a better system for you or your
company. Don't settle for typing a name and drawing a line under it.
Anyone with a simple word processor can do that, and there are thousands
just like that out there. Design something different, something that will
catch your customer's or client's eye and tell him that your company is
the one they want.
You don't have to be an artist. Anything your mind can conceive as a
letterhead, can be reproduced. If you think you are limited by your laser
printer, then you have not really pushed it to its limits. Using the
resources available to you with Laser Letterhead plus, you can run your
company name around in a circle, print up the side of the page, use three
dimensional fountain fill letters, shade and dither to your heart's
delight. Where typefaces and fonts leave off, PCX logos, images, and
full page watermarks take over and extend it to the limits of your
imagination.
Before inserting your own data in SetUp, print out all the various
letterhead styles of the Ace Aeroplane and Zeppelin Company. If you
have the slightest spark of creativity in you, this program will kindle
it and start it burning. Draw some sketches, if it helps. We have a
Basic Customized PCX Pak that will help you do it. We will be glad to
send the Pak to you when you register the product with us. We'll help
you create attractive letterheads and send you the customized PCX
images you need to get up and going.
~
Page 7
Is all this an attempt to get you to register? Well, Yes and No....
No, if you do not like the program. Toss it..or place it in one of those
overcrowded file cases and forget it.
And yes, but only if you like what you see. We will let you be the judge.
Follow the Quick Start Instructions and get up and running. Print a few
letterheads from Ace Aeroplane and Zeppelin Company and get an idea of
what is possible. Then put in your company data and we are sure you will
send off for the customized PCX images that you received with your
registration.
If you already have your own PCX logo, try your hand at setting it
up on a letter and mingling it with other images and watermarks. If
you need a format changed to PCX, check the Registration Form and see
if we can convert it to PCX format.
The Quick Start Instructions will launch on your way rapidly. On start
up, Laser Letterhead will immediately configure itself for your computer.
Later, you may adjust this configuration in SetUp to your preferences.
All default settings are being used, and the program is fully loaded with
PCX images.
If you have only 512K of laser printer RAM you are limited to soft fonts
and possibly one small Special Logo. Unless you plan to use your printer
only for printing text in small documents, 512K of RAM will not get you
very far. If you really want to enjoy having a laser printer, consider
upgrading to at least 2 megabytes of RAM. Until you reach that point,
you will have to count every byte whenever you print a document containing
graphics images.
For the vision impaired, Laser Letterhead plus is available with a large
font screen driver. You will receive the Vision Disk that is used with
the install program. This disk contains additional aids to help you
customize the screen to your needs. This is available on the registration
form included with this Handbook. There is no additional charge.
NOTE: You may bring this Handbook up on screen while running Laser Letter-
head plus if you Press Function Key F1. This does not work in TextWriter.
TextWriter has its own F1 Help while in the ADD or EDIT modes.

6. ** QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS **
==============================================================================
These Instructions Assume You Are Using Soft Fonts. If You Intend to Use
Cartridge Fonts, You Only Need to Enter Them Properly in Font SetUp. Go
to SetUp in this Handbook and enter the font names exactly as instructed.
AFTER INSTALLATION (README.DOC FILE), YOU MAY QUICKLY USE LASER LETTERHEAD
PLUS BY USING THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
YOU WILL BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS PROGRAM, HOW IT WORKS, AND HOW TO MAKE
CORRECT ENTRIES INTO SETUP IF YOU DO THE FOLLOWING:
1. The program is pre-setup for a DEMO PRINTING SESSION if you have a set
of soft fonts ready. Any PCL bitmap soft fonts, such as Bitstream or Type
Director are fine. FONTS IN POSTSCRIPT OR TRUETYPE FORMAT WILL NOT WORK.
This Quick Start assumes you know a little about fonts. But if you do not,
don't worry, follow along... It's really not that difficult. Along the way
we will offer easy options.
2.The INSTALL program will set up the program so it would be ready to use.
If want to change the drive and directory where the program is located, or
the location of your soft fonts, rerun the INSTALL program. Internal
changes regarding the location of your fonts and the path to them, are
placed in the program and you will not be able to download fonts or do
any print functions without the correct information given to INSTALL.
-> Hint: By placing your fonts in the same directory as the program,
you will be able to view them by pressing Function Key F10. When you are
using Font SetUp - Screen #2, F10 will run a DIR on the current directory.
This makes it easier to enter correctly the names of the font files.
3.If you do not know the names of your fonts, and did not place them in
the same directory with the program files, do a "PRINT SCREEN" on the
directory where they are located. You will need to know the correct names,
point size, and orientation to enter them in SetUp.
-> Hint: Taking the last hint a step further, you could first install your
fonts in the current directory, and when all is entered properly save the
LETTER.DAT file onto a diskette. Move your font files to a directory of
choice, reinstall the program, and copy LETTER.DAT to the current
directory. This way you could use F10 to view them for correct entry.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE PCL BITMAP SOFT FONTS, DO NOT EXPECT THE PROGRAM TO WORK
PROPERLY. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO OBTAIN PCL BITMAP SOFT FONTS, CALL
813-544-0212 FOR HELP. THE PROPER FONTS ARE CRUCIAL TO THIS PROGRAM.
4. Type the letters LP to start the program. After reading the initial
shareware screen, strike <ENTER> to remove it. The title screen will
appear. You may again strike <ENTER> to remove it also. The program will
then begin its initial configuration and search for extended or expanded
memory. Many computers have a megabyte or more of memory installed. If
this is your situation, Laser Letterhead will attempt to place some of
its programing into this memory. You will be asked to turn your laser
printer on and connect it to your computer. The program will offer to
download your soft fonts for you.
~
Page 9
REPLY using "N" FOR "NO" at this time. You will have to place your fonts
into the SetUp program before you may download them. The program will
settle down at the Main Menu. The MAIN MENU is the screen that leads you
to all other modules and selections.
5. To enter your fonts in setup, you must first go to the SETUP program.
Select SetUp Program or "S" at the Main Menu. When the Setup Menu appears,
Press "FONT SELECTION" or "F" on the Setup Menu. You will then be in
"FONT SETUP - SCREEN #2".
6. If font sizes are not a problem, use sizes near those already entered:
24pts,18pts,12pts,10pts, 14pts for portrait orientation, then 14pts and
12pts for landscape. Otherwise, come fairly close. You may find that you
can use the same fonts in different positions. Make sure you have portrait
and landscape fonts in the correct locations.
If your laser printer automatically rotates portrait fonts, you may find
that the soft fonts that you are using may not cooperate. To be sure of a
good print out, place real landscape fonts in the positions indicated.
Replace the font names in font setup with the names of the fonts that you
are using. Remember that the font names placed in font setup when you
received the program are only there as examples. They do not actually exist
on disk. Leave the column on the far right just as it is with "" entered.
This indicates that you are using soft fonts and not cartridge fonts.
If you are using cartridge fonts you must enter them in a special way. Go
to that section in the handbook and enter as shown. We do not recommend
using cartridge fonts until you become familiar with the program.
7. If your soft fonts are in with the program files in the current
directory, press FUNCTION KEY F7 and all files will be displayed on the
screen.
BE VERY CAREFUL ENTERING THE NAMES OF YOUR FONT FILES. Most commonly,
the numerical zero and alphabetical "O" are mistaken for each other.
The numerical "one" and alphabetical "L" are also victims of mistaken
identity. If you misspell a font name or do not place a font in its
proper directory, the program will detect it during downloading, and
will display the names of the problem fonts on the screen.
Some soft fonts have very confusing font file names, with numbers embedded
in them that do not reflect their point sizes and jumbled letters that
do not reveal their typeface or orientation.
IF YOU ARE NEW AT USING SOFT FONTS AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE FONT SETUP
SCREEN #2 OR WHAT YOU ARE DOING, THEN GO TO THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SETUP
SECTION IN THIS HANDBOOK. READ "HOW TO USE SOFT FONTS" AND FOLLOW THE STEP
BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH FONT ENTRY. AND REMEMBER - YOU MUST USE PCL
BITMAP SOFT FONTS FOR EVERYTHING TO WORK CORRECTLY IN THIS PROGRAM. DO NOT
ASSUME THAT YOUR FONTS ARE PCL BITMAP FONTS. READ THE LITERATURE THAT CAME
WITH THEM. CALL 813-544-0212 IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

==============================================================================
7. DOWNLOADING SOFT FONTS TO THE PRINTER
==============================================================================
When all font files have been entered properly bring the cursor down to
the bottom of the screen by pressing <CTRL> + <W> or striking the <ENTER>
key repeatedly. You will be asked:
Is This Correct? Y>es N>o
If all is correct, press "Y" for YES and the following will appear on
screen:
Do you want to Download Soft Fonts to the Printer? Y>es N>o
Answer "Y" for YES. All fonts correctly downloaded will be displayed on
screen. Any that were not downloaded will not be shown. When downloading
is completed, the unsuccessful fonts will be displayed. They will slowly
rotate around from first to last.
Strike <ENTER> when you have seen all the downloading errors. The screen
will return back to Font SetUp, any you may then make corrections.
Generally, the problem is spelling or what is entered is not in the
directory where it should be found.
ON THE OTHER HAND, If 9 fonts were downloaded successfully with no errors,
your font entry was flawless. You will exit Screen #2 and be back at
the SetUp Menu. Press "R" to leave the SetUp Menu. You will be asked if
you wish to S>ave All Changes and Exit SetUp or R>eturn back to SetUp.
Select "S" and Exit. You may now retreat back through the menus to the
Main Menu (Press "R" to go backwards through the Menus).
You do not have to download PCX images. You will, however, need more than
512K of RAM for to use large PCX files. PCX files are rapidly downloaded
at print time, and deleted immediately after use. But they do require
RAM for the few moments they reside in your printer. If you run out of
laser printer RAM, it will not do any harm to your printer. You will get
an overflow error, and then be able to finish printing with whatever RAM
you had available.
NOTE: REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE NO SOFT FONTS INCLUDED IN THIS PROGRAM.
IF YOU ATTEMPT TO DOWNLOAD FONTS WITHOUT ANY IN THE PROGRAM
DIRECTORY, OR PLACED IN A FONT DIRECTORY OF YOUR CHOICE, YOU WILL
RECEIVE MULTIPLE ERRORS AND YOUR LETTERHEADS WILL NOT PRINT.

==============================================================================
8.SUGGESTED PLAN ON HOW TO PROCEED FROM THIS POINT
==============================================================================
1. Select Letterhead on the Main Menu. Use the following descriptive
material to explain the abbreviations and selections on the various
screens. Most of the following is in the same order as it will appear.
Attempt to know what you are selecting or rejecting.
2. Print one of each letterhead type. Then go to envelopes. Print an
envelope with the return address, return and mailing address, and
mailing address.
NOTE: Instead of using regular envelopes for practice, select the Business
#10 envelope, and use a plain 8.5" X 11" paper folded in half lengthwise,
so you may reverse the fold and use it four times. If you like, cut it off
at 9.5" so its size with match the business envelope exactly. Also, after
printing a few "envelopes", go back to the font menu and vary the point
size of the fonts, if you have additional point sizes available. Settle on
a point size that looks right on the envelope. (72 points = 1")
3. Use TextWriter to print a document with letterhead, logo, and watermark.
Document No. 1 is a sample letter that you may use. TextWriter will auto-
matically bring this document up on screen. As long as it is on screen, it
is the current document and may be printed. Select "O" for Output to print
this letter, then select "Laser Letterhead plus". TextWriter will shift you
to the letterhead selections where you may choose your letterhead. After
the letterhead is printed, insert an envelope or sheet of paper into the
manual slot of your printer. TextWriter will move to the envelope selection
screens, where you may select an envelope along with a few other items.
Then, the envelope will be printed. You will note that this is probably
the fastest letter to envelope printing that you have ever experienced.
4. After this is done go into the SetUp program and convert the data
entered on the Basic SetUp and Slogan Screen #1 to your own data. Turn
to the section in the handbook that describes each entry in SetUp. Use it
as a guide. SetUp is the key to the entire program: it is not meant to be
cryptic and the better you understand the shortened terms and entries, the
better you will enjoy the program.
5. Screen #2 is the Font Selection Screen that you already completed. The
PCX Image File SetUp for Regular, Only Logo, and Special Letter is Screen
#3. Make sure you have a good ruler, at least 8" long. Try relocating the
images.
6. The Graphics and Text SetUp Screen #4 is next. Have your printed
letters handy so you will understand better what you are doing. Use the
SetUp instructions below as a guide. After you have placed your own
information in SetUp, print some letterheads and envelopes and adjust the
measurements and locations of items, if necessary. Somewhere in all of the
above, send in your Registration Form so that you may received the basic
images needed to produce your own customized letterheads.
Good luck, and enjoy Laser Letterhead plus!

9. PRINTING LETTERHEADS
==============================================================================
Laser Letterhead was designed so that you could easily make your way
through the menus without the help of a manual. In doing this, you may
find some abbreviations and selections on the menu that may not be clear
to you.
The following is an explanation of terms and abbreviations found on the
screens with a detailed description of each letterhead type. Make your
selection by pressing the highlighted letter if you have a color monitor.
The highlighted letter includes ">" to set if off, as in S>tandard.
Monochrome Monitors may easily make selections from words that contain
the ">". (Do not attempt to type the ">").
Navigating the entry screens: Use <UP-ARROW> key go upwards or backwards
from field to field. Use <ENTER> or <DOWN-ARROW> to go downward of forward
from field to field. Tab key is inactive.
A. Select paper size
IF you are using S>tardard 8.5" X 11" paper, select "S"; otherwise, select
any paper size that you have loaded in your laser printer.
B. Select placing a date on the letterhead, using logos, printing a slogan,
and creating a watermark. How you answer these questions will determine
what additional details will have to be supplied later.
Examples: If date, today's date? If logos, which ones?
1. Date: If you elect to place a date on the letterhead, it will be
included in a. the letterhead area itself for the Regular Computer
Generated letterhead, b. where you elected to place it in setup, for
other types.
2. Logo: The Regular Letterhead has only one logo, the others have two.
The locations for all of them are selected in setup. If you elect to
use the logo images, you will print at least one and have the option
to print the other. You may use any PCX image, including clip-art, as
a logo.
3. Slogan: A slogan is a short phrase of 50 characters. You may use differ-
ent slogans on the letter and envelope. The slogan may be place anywhere
on the page. The location is selected in setup as well as all the
options below. A slogan may be:
a. boxed with a choice of 3 different borders or no border.
b. gray-shaded from 0% (white - no shading) to 100% (solid black).
You may select a gray-shading to match a shaded bar baseline (line,
gray-shaded bar, or pattern under letterhead) if one is selected.
The slogan and any graphics do not require additional laser RAM.
The RAM required for the slogan is included in the font download.
~
Page 13
c. graphic fill pattern of 6 different designs, no pattern, or a shadow.
You may select a graphic fill pattern to match the letterhead
baseline (line, gray-shaded bar, or pattern under letterhead) if one
is selected.
d. a frame surrounding the graphic fill pattern in 3 different types
or no frame.
4. Watermark: A watermark is a very light image, usually 1% to 5% of
the normal image density. It is intended for a background image and
may be almost as large as the page. Because of this larger size, you
will note that it takes a little longer for watermarks to print. The
name "watermark" is used here because it is similar to the watermarks
placed on fine paper. A watermark is a PCX image of any text or
artistic design. If preferred, a regular PCX image or clip-art of
regular density may be used. The location of the watermark is
selected in setup.
C. Basic letterhead types use the abbreviations C,L,S or O. Each of these
are available in a distinctly different personal or business version.
The Regular Letterhead is split into a centered or left-justified
grouping, as you will see below.
That means you may print 8 different letterheads from each setup session
that has 3 types of letterhead styles in setup. Then, you may vary your
setup entries and print 8 more different letterheads. This does not include
the different letterhead variations resulting from including or excluding
setup options at print time.
1. Enter any valid date, print up to 99 copies, and select either
the P>ersonal or B>usines version. An invalid date, such as 12/32/93
or 2/30/93 will cause an "Invalid date" to appear on the top right
of the screen. You must press the <SPACE BAR> to remove this error
and continue. The current date is the default date.
2. "C" or "L" describes the letterhead grouping of the "Regular" Computer
Generated letterhead. "C" is for "Centered" letterhead, while "L" is
"Left" justified. In setup there is only one Regular Letterhead, but
at print time you may center it, or left-justify all the text at the
margin. Each "C" and "L" version has different personal and business
arrangements. Each version may have one PCX logo, a slogan, and a
watermark. The letterhead may have a baseline or boxed frame around
the letterhead text. The following is selected in setup:
a. single line, double-line, dotted line, or no line baseline.
b. gray-shaded box around the letterhead, or plain unshaded box, with
3 types of borders or no border.
The "C" and "L" selections are those you would use if you have only
512K of RAM in your laser printer. They require no additional RAM other
than what you consumed by downloading them. You might be able to print a
small PCX logo or watermark if your font files are not too large.
~
Page 14
3. "S" is the Special Logo Letterhead. The letterhead is computer
generated, but the user has quite a bit on control. In setup, the
letterhead text may be moved horizontally, so that a logo or image
may share the letterhead area. If you have limited RAM in your laser,
use this selection with a small PCX image. Other options in setup are:
a. letterhead may be automatically centered.
b. baseline may be:
1. no baseline
2. single thin line
3. double line
4. dotted line
5. heavy black line
6. gray-shaded bar from 0% to 100% shading
7. graphic pattern fill bar with choice of 6 pattern designs
8. both gray-shaded bar and graphic pattern fill bar may have
no border, or single line, double line, or dotted line border.
c. baseline line/bar may be turned upright and used for left or right
margin line or bar or placed anywhere on the page.
d. personal name and business title may be located anywhere on the page,
including embedding it within a PCX image. However, the use or
omission of the personal name and business title is left as a print-
time decision.
e. date may be automatically centered or placed anywhere on the page,
including embedding it within a PCX image. Its use or omission is
a print-time decision.
f. The use or omission at print-time of two logos or images that may
be placed anywhere on the page, embedded within each other, or
joined. A slogan and watermark are also selected at print-time.
4. "O" is the Only Logo Letterhead. The letterhead is 100% PCX image that
may be designed in any program that manipulates fonts or text and
creates graphic drawings and effects with images. A letterhead may
therefore run up the left-margin or print text around a circle.
a. personal name and business title may be located anywhere on the page.
The use or omission of this selection is a print time decision.
b. a second PCX image may be placed anywhere on the page, including
embedding it within the letterhead image, or joined to it. Its use
or omission is a print-time decision, along with a slogan and
watermark.
c. date may be automatically centered or placed anywhere on the page,
including embedding it within a PCX image. Its use or omission is
a print-time decision.

==============================================================================
10. PRINTING ENVELOPES - THE ADJUSTABLE SIZE ENVELOPE
==============================================================================
Printing envelopes differs from letterheads mainly because you have to
deal with the address database. The address database saves your addresses
so that you may simply select one when you address a letter.
Whenever you elect to save an address, it is placed into the address
database. You assign the address a short descriptive title that may be
up to 20 characters long. The address is then entered into the database
and sorted alphabetically by the short descriptive titles and is assigned
a list number.
When you want to look up an address to place on an envelope, the database
may be displayed showing the list numbers, the descriptive title, and
the first line of the address. From this display you select the list
number of the address.
You will always have the opportunity to edit an address before using it.
You also have the option of discarding an address after using it, even if
you selected it from the database. For addresses you want to keep you
MUST elect to SAVE them. Remember...not saving an address selected from
the database, will delete it from the database.
NAVIGATING THE ENTRY SCREENS: Use <UP-ARROW> key to go upwards or back-
wards from field to field. Use <ENTER> or <DOWN-ARROW> to go downward
of forward from field to field. Tab key is inactive. When navigating
the data base address screens, the same keys above applies. The
<LEFT-ARROW> key will carry the cursor to the left without erasing
characters. The <RIGHT-ARROW> key will do the same, but to the right.
The <BACK-SPACE> key will backspace and erase. The <INSERT> key toggles
the overwrite feature. A right-hand number pad may be used for numbers
(if you have a number pad) as well as the top row of keys. <CTRL> + <W>
combination always saves your entries and brings the cursor down and
out of the last field.
A. Select the envelope size.
For practice use regular paper folded lengthwise and cut off at 9.5".
This will be the exact size of the B>usiness #10 envelope, any you
may turn it over and refold it so it may be used 4 times.
The menu lists all the sizes that Hewlett-Packard supports, plus a few
extra. The Monarch, COM-10 or Business Size, DL, and C5. We added the
Official #9 and the Small Envelope. Both of these are in common use and
must also be recognized.
However, what was needed was a size that would handle large catalog
envelopes or any size that does not fall under the specific sizes that
Hewlett-Packard has defined. For that reason, we have programmed in an
Adjustable envelope size that will take any size larger or smaller than
those offered by Hewlett-Packard. This section uses the large catalog
envelope as an example, but the same would apply to any size envelope.
~
Page 16
1. Templates: In order to do this, we have set up two templates to guide
you in measuring the positions for the return address, mailing address,
and slogan. These templates are the same sizes of the largest paper sheet
sizes that the LaserJet will accept: 8.5"X 11" and 8.5" X 14". Why not
just the large 8.5" x 14" size? Many offices never handle anything that
large. In fact, many do not have a 8.5" x 14" piece of paper anywhere in
the office. Measuring would require taping a piece of paper onto an 8.5"
x 11" sheet every time a template was needed. So with two sizes of
templates you may pick what is handy and easiest for you.
2. How to use a Template: A template is merely a pattern on which you
may position your envelope and measure down from the top edge. The
second measurement is taken from left edge of the template horizontally
across to the right. These are the normal methods for finding a position
in Laser Letterhead plus. The important factor is that the paper must
be turned so that the longest length of the paper is horizontal or in a
landscape position. This is because envelopes are fed into the laser
printer in a landscape position. The edge that enters the laser printer,
is where all measurements start.
3. The important Right Edge: Remember, however, we are not really doing
that when we measure down from the top and in from the left side of
the template. The edge that enters the printer first is the right edge in
a landscape position. The program recalculates all that, so don't worry
about it. Just keep measuring from the left edge. The only thing you must
do, is to place your envelope on top of the template so that the right
edge of the template and the envelope are right on top of each other.
4. The other measurement: That takes care of the right edge, but now where
do you place the other edge... Top or bottom? That depends upon how your
laser feeds the envelope into the printer. If your printer has a manual
feed with expandable guides, chances are that the envelope travels down
the exact center position of your template. This means that when fitting
your envelope onto the template, you must place it in the middle and
lined up with both right edges together, so there is equal space on the
top and bottom of the template.
5 .Notice how your printer feeds envelopes: If it feeds envelopes
into your laser using the top or bottom edge of the envelope against left
or right side, then move the envelope up or down on the template to the
correct position. The last step is to then measure down from the top for
your VER position and from the left edge in horizontally for the HOR
position.
NOTE --> OPTION: If all of this is too complicated, then there is a
simpler method, but it requires making several print outs: Simply guess
where you think all the positions are, print an envelope, and THEN
measure how much up or down or sideways you have to move each position.
Repeat adjusting and printing until you get it right.
~
Page 17
B. There are no abbreviations corresponding the C, L, S, and O of
the letterhead since the format on an envelope does not require that
type of variance. Usually the font typeface chosen for the return
address matches the letterhead typeface.
C. There are 3 types of envelope printing procedures:
1. R>eturn Address
2. B>oth Return and Mailing Address
3. M>ailing Address
Of these, the return address with the mailing address, and the mailing
address only, will call up the Address Database, in the event you wish
to use an address that you have on file.
D. There is, however, a separate business and personal return address.
You will be asked on all screens, except when using the mailing address
only, to select a B>usiness or P>ersonal return address.
E. Available options for return address, both return address and mailing
address, and mailing address.
1. Return Address
1. Personal or Business
2. Plain or Baseline added
a. plain address has the 3 lines of text: name, street address,
and city, state, and zip code. No baseline of any type is
used under the return address.
b. baseline: a line or bar under the return address. The
length of the baseline is always the same as the longest
line of the address. Baseline options in Setup:
1. none - if this option is set, then there is no print-time
option to select a baseline
2. single line
3. double line
4. dotted line
5. heavy black line
6. gray-shaded bar with shading from 0% (white) to 100% (black)
7. graphic fill patterned bar with 6 selectable patterns
8. border for the gray-shaded bar and fill pattern bar:
a. none
b. single line
c. double line
d. dotted line
3. Slogan: A slogan is a short phrase of 50 characters. You may use
different slogans on the letter and envelope. The slogan may be
placed anywhere on the envelope. The location is selected in setup
as well as all the options that make up the graphics surrounding
the slogan.
~
Page 18
d. a frame surrounding the graphic fill pattern in 3 different types
or no frame.
2. Both Return Address and Mailing Address
a. Return Address
(same as above) selection of personal or business is placed after
mailing address is entered
b. Slogan
(same as above)
c. New Address or Mailing List:
1. The new address selection will take you directly to a screen
that is the exact dimensions of the address area on the envelope
- 40 characters by 5 lines. The Mailing List selection will
ask if you wish to see the address database to select an address.
When the address is selected, it is placed on the above screen
- 40 characters by 5 lines. There the address may be edited
including the description and label list selection.
2. A label selection box will allow you to place this address on
the label list if desired. The label utility located in the
Envelope Menu will permit those selected addresses to be
printed on labels. They may be switched to envelopes rather
than labels, if you prefer, by using BatchMailer.
3. A short description (20 characters) of the address is mandatory,
because the Address List database is sorted on the address
description. A list number is assigned to the address. When
displayed, the list number, description, and first line of
the address are displayed. The address is selected by the list
number.
d. S>ave or D>iscard Address after this printing.
1. Any address, whether new or taken from the address database, may
be discarded at this point. If an address is to be placed back
into the database or if a new address is to be placed into the
database, it MUST be S>AVED by replying with an "S".
2. If the "R" for R>eturn is pressed on any of the screens prior
to printing the address, no action is taken to delete the
address from the database and no action is taken to save it to
the database. If it was chosen from the database it will remain
in the database. If it is a new address it is not saved to the
database.
3. Mailing Address Only
(same as 2b, 2c, and 2d)

===============================================================================
11. TEXTWRITER - A SPECIAL TYPE OF WORD PROCESSOR
===============================================================================
TextWriter is designed to be an easy and quick compact word processor that
permits you to type 44 lines of text on a letterhead page. It will use a fixed
space (non-proportional) internal laser printer font, such as COURIER 10 or
may use a downloaded font. Fixed space fonts are easy to use and will give you
a what-you-see-is-what-you-get arrangement of text on the page. The menus
are clear, self explanatory, and not cryptic. The ESC key is used extensively
throughout TextWriter, and is usually available to cancel a menu and back out
of a process. In ADD or EDIT mode, ESC will bring up the Edit Options Menu.
The entire process of writing a letter is reduced to a minimum. You may create
a new address for the letter and save it to the Address List. TextWriter will
automatically place any address from the Address List, or a new address, on
the top 5 lines (or less, if your addresses are shorter) at the left margin.
After the letter is finished, you may select to print it immediately. Text-
Writer will bring up all letterhead screens and you may select your
letterhead, logos, watermark, and so on. When the printing is completed, you
will be taken directly to the envelope module, where all the envelope choices
may be made. You may remove the letter from the printer and insert an envelope
into the manual slot. TextWriter will take the address you had placed on the
letter, and display it to you so it may, if you wish, be edited in any way.
The envelope is then printed and you may remove it from the laser. It is
ready for mailing.

When you first access TextWriter, the Screen Menu bar will highlight the ADD
selection and display the first document in TEXT.DAT, the document database
file. Use the ARROW KEYS + ENTER to move the highlight to another selection,
or merely type the first letter of a selection. The ESC key returns you to a
previous menu.
ADD and EDIT, will open a new or old document:
1. ADD: Press "A" or move the highlight with the arrow keys to ADD and press
ENTER. You may then have the choice of writing a document from scratch,
placing an address on it from the Address List, copying an existing document
so you may fashion it to your needs, or importing a document.
2. EDIT: The document displayed on screen is the CURRENT document. To EDIT
any document, you must first make it the CURRENT document. Do this by
pressing "E" or moving the highlight with the arrow keys to EDIT and striking
ENTER. Use "Scan for another document on file" on the EDIT menu, the JUMP
keys, or SEARCH to make a document the CURRENT document. Then press "E"
to EDIT the currently displayed document. The EDIT menu will also let you
change or edit the Macro Phrase list to any phrase of your choice.
~
Page 20
ID selection will let you rearrange the order of documents:
As you create documents, each one is given a number consecutively. If you
delete a document, the number given to it is also deleted. This selection
will let you reassign numbers to documents or assign new numbers to
documents. This includes reassigning deleted document numbers to another
document. You may also switch numbers around on documents, but no two
documents may have the same number. TextWriter will always rearrange the
documents into their new consecutive order.
A document identification number may be changed by first making it the
CURRENT document. Then assign it an unused number. Use any number up to
999,999, or a number from an old deleted document. There is no limit to
how may times you may access a document and change its ID number.
The JUMP keys - PRIOR, NEXT, FIRST, and LAST:
1. These selections let you "JUMP" through the TEXT.DAT file of documents.
They are part of the fast document handling system. If you are at the first
document, pressing "N" or moving the highlight to NEXT and pressing ENTER
will make the next document the CURRENT document. Pressing "N" or ENTER
repeatedly when on the highlighted NEXT will page through the entire file.
Pressing EDIT twice when a document is the current document will open that
document for you to edit.
2. The PRIOR selection works in the same way as the NEXT selection, only it
travels backwards in TEXT.DAT to the first document.
3. FIRST and LAST will let you jump instantly to the beginning document or to
the last document. If document ID number order is unchanged, the LAST
document is always the newest document.
SEARCH will let you find any document by knowing one word in it:
SEARCH will go through every document on file and find any word. As it
rapidly moves through the documents, they will be shown on the screen. Each
time it finds the sought-after word, it will stop and ask if it should
continue. All of TEXT.DAT will be searched, if necessary.
REPLACE any word or phrase with another:
1. When making this selection, you will be taken directly to the field under
"Search For" and "Replace with". Place the appropriate words in each field.
However, if you wish to CANCEL, first strike ENTER twice to take you through
and out of each of these fields. Then strike "C" to cancel.
2. Each field will take a word or a phrase. Every document is search. You may
select which occurrences that you want the word or phrase replaced. You may
cancel anytime, or you may select to replace ALL without prompting.
DELETE a document:
The document you wish to delete must first be made the CURRENT document with
SCAN from the EDIT menu, the JUMP keys, or SEARCH. When this is accomplished,
examine the document carefully to make sure you want to delete it. There is
NO WAY that you may UNDO this selection.
~
Page 21
OUTPUT to printer or export a file:
1. Output to Laser Letterhead plus will load the CURRENT document into memory
and take you directly to the letterhead module for selection of a letterhead.
After the document is printed with your selected options, you will then be
taken to the envelope module when an envelope may be printed with the
address used on the document.
2. Direct Printing is fast and will print the document without letterhead,
logo, or watermark. You may change the format of the document: vary the
margins or use double spacing. This will NOT affect the original format in
TextWriter... It only affects the printed output. Also, you may use the
underline (ALT L to toggle ON or OFF) or bold (ALT B to toggle ON or OFF),
Direct Printing will print it with those enhancements.
3. Export document: You may export the document out of the TEXT.DAT file
into a disk file in ascii format and may also read a document you have
exported by printing it to the screen. To IMPORT a document into TEXT.DAT,
use the ADD menu above.
QUIT TextWriter:
Exiting from TextWriter using the Quit selection will not load a document to
print. you will return to the Laser Letterhead Main Menu in normal fashion.
B. EDITING OPTIONS MENU AND THE FUNCTION KEYS: EITHER/OR
Edit Options Menu: While editing or creating a new document, pressing the ESC
key will bring up the Editing Options Menu. All editing options are also
available by using the function keys. The Editing Options Menu must be called
up while editing or creating a document by pressing the ESC key. However,
when the Editing Options Menu is displayed on screen, the Function Keys are
DISABLED. To select an item from the Editing Options Menu, type the first
letter of a selection or move the highlighted bar to the selection using the
ARROW keys and press ENTER. To dismiss the Editing Options Menu, press the
ESC key again. When the Editing Options Menu is not on screen, the FUNCTION
KEYS indicated below may be used.
The Following Selections are Found on the Edit Options Menu and are also
accessible by using the indicated Function Keys:
F1 - HELP - The Help screen will display screen navigation keys and also
the function keys. The two items that may be of interest and are not covered
in other sections of the Handbook, are the BOLD ON/OFF and UNDERLINE ON/OFF.
If you are direct printing, that is, not printing through Laser Letterhead
plus with a letterhead, logo, and watermark, these options are available.
If you do use them when printing a full letterhead, they will be ignored.
F2 - Insert a phrase - TextWriter will let you use up to 50 phrases of
your own construction for insertion into documents. Originally, there are 50
demo phrases already setup in the Macro Phrase List. You may edit /remove/add
these phrases by calling up the Edit Menu and selecting "Macro Phrase
Editing."
~
Page 22
The Macro Phrases may be used in any document when you are in Edit
or Add mode. Place the cursor where you want to insert a phrase. Then press
F-2 or ESC and select "Insert a Phrase" from the Options Menu. The Macro
Phrase List will pop up. You may scroll through the list using the ARROW keys
plus ENTER. However, there is an easier way: Start typing the beginning of
the phrase that you want to use while the list is on screen. You will see
"FIND:" plus the words you are typing at the bottom of the pop-up window. The
highlight will automatically move to that phrase as you type. Strike ENTER
when the highlight is on the desired phrase.
F-3 - Text Search - See SEARCH above. The TAB key may be used to navigate
from field to field. You may search using UPPER/lower case, partial word
matching, fuzzy logic (approximate word matching), and choose to start from
the top or beginning document. You may stop the search on any occurrence
where the word is located.
F-4 - Search and Replace - See REPLACE above. The TAB key may be used to
navigate through the various selections. Automatic replacement will NOT
occur unless you select it.
F-5 - Paste Text - Before pasting text from the clipboard, you must have
marked the text and cut or copied it to the clipboard, using F-7 or F-8. When
pasting text, place the cursor on the exact spot where you want the text to
appear, and select F-7. Once text is placed on the clipboard, it may be
pasted into ANY document in TEXT.DAT.
F-6 - Mark Text - To mark text, place the cursor on the spot where you wish
to start marking. Press F-6 and the character above the cursor will be
highlighted. More the cursor character by character or line by line using the
ARROW keys. The UP/DOWN ARROW keys will mark whole lines, while RIGHT/LEFT
ARROW keys will mark single characters. Once highlighted, you may select to
copy or cut the text with F-7 or F-8.
F-7 -Cut Marked Text - Any marked text will be cut or moved to the clipboard
when F-7 is pressed. If you found that you made an error, you may immediately
UNDO or replace the text using PASTE or F-5. In effect, the text is deleted
from the document, but saved on the clipboard.
NOTE: Text that has been cut or copied to the clipboard may be pasted into
any document in TEXT.DAT. The clipboard works between documents so that a
large portion of text may be copied into one or many other documents using
the PASTE feature. After cutting or copying text to the clipboard, close the
current document and open another document. Move the cursor to the desired
position and press F-5 to paste the text into that document. PASTE does not
remove the text from the clipboard. You may PASTE the same text repeatedly.
However, if you QUIT TextWriter or go to another module, the clipboard is
cleared.
F-8 - Copy Marked Text - This selection will not delete or remove text from
the document, but creates a copy on the clipboard. If you wish to make a copy
and paste it in the same document, use F-8 to make a copy on the clipboard.
Then move the cursor to another place in the document and press F-5 to place
it there. Or, if you wish to copy text into another document, mark the text
with F-6, and copy it to the clipboard with F-8. Then close the current
document and open the target document. Place the cursor where you want to
insert the text, and press F-5 to paste the text in that document.
~
Page 23
F-9 - Zoom in or Out - The F-9 key is a toggle. Pressing it once will ZOOM
out to the largest text display possible for your video adapter. Pressing it
again will ZOOM it back in. In order to use this feature, you must be in EDIT
or ADD mode in the current document.
Registration - This selection appears on the Edit Options Menu. There is no
Function Key equivalent. Pressing "S" will display the registration screen
that appeared when Laser Letterhead plus started up. This screen contains
important registration instructions.
F-10 - Exit and Save - While in EDIT or ADD mode, you may save and exit the
current document by pressing F-10. QUIT on the Editing Options Menu will not
save your work. If you decide to revert back to the original document, QUIT
will undo all editing. You will find that F-10 is used through out TextWriter
to SAVE and EXIT. If you are on any TextWriter menu screen and wish to EXIT
press F-10.
C. THE OUTPUT OPTIONS: PRINTING, EXPORTING, OR DISPLAYING A DOCUMENT
1. Laser Letterhead plus - This selection will load the current document into
memory and take you directly to the letterhead module to select a letterhead,
logo, watermark, and all the other available options. The statement "Text-
Writer Document is loaded to print. . ." will appear at the top of screen.
After printing the current document, TextWriter will then take you to the
envelope module where an envelope will be printed using the address placed on
the TextWriter document. This is a fast way to print a document and address
an envelope. On the Direct Printing Menu there is a selection "Counting and
printing" that will let you choose how high on the printed letterhead page
to start TextWriter's body of text and the font to use for the task.
NOTE: IF YOU WISH TO STOP PRINTING AND RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU WHILE
"TEXTWRITER DOCUMENT IS LOADED TO PRINT" ARE AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN,
MERELY PRESS THE "R" FOR RETURN AT ANY MENU. IF YOU WANTED TO PRINT THE
CURRENT DOCUMENT IN LLHP WITHOUT ADDRESSING AN ENVELOPE, PRESS "R" IN THE
ENVELOPE MODULE TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU.
2. Direct Printing - Direct printing bypasses Laser Letterhead plus, so you
may print directly to your laser printer. It is very fast and once invoked
takes only a few seconds. This is handy when you want a quick print out of a
document, or a second page of a letter. Sometimes you may want a copy of a
document for reference, or to place in a client's folder. The "Edit format
of document for output" selection will let you select the margins, lines per
page, single/double spacing, and top/bottom margins. Note that you may use
UNDERLINING and BOLD print in direct printing. See the Help Screen by press-
ing F-1.
3. Export - "Write or Export document to a file" - This process has been made
very simple with self-explanatory menus. The file being exported will have to
be given a name. You may see a list of files exported to the disk or view
files. If you wish to import one of these files into another word processor,
that word processor must have the capability to import ASCII files. Most word
processors have little trouble doing that. Text Editors, such as DOS 5.0's
EDIT are able to utilize ASCII files. If you wish to IMPORT an ASCII file
into TextWriter, you may do so using "Import a document" on the ADD Menu.
This will place that document in TEXT.DAT for fast access by TextWriter.
~
Page 24
D. COUNTING DOCUMENTS
When TextWriter starts up, it normally counts and verifies all documents on
file and sets them up for fast access. Then, as you go through documents, it
keeps track of where you are in TEXT.DAT. This is a very handy reference, but
it may create a rather long start-up delay if you have a few thousand docu-
ments on file. If you want to save time, you may turn off initial document
counting and verification process. Select "Output" from the Screen Menu Bar.
Next, select "Direct printing or export." Lastly, select "Setup defaults:
counting and printing." This will bring up the Default Settings for Text-
Writer. The "Turn Document Count On/Off" selection should then be turned OFF.
E. QUIT TEXTWRITER
You may exit TextWriter by printing the current document in Laser Letterhead
plus, or select "QUIT" from the Screen Menu Bar. "QUIT" will exit you back to
the Main Menu of Laser Letterhead plus WITHOUT loading the current document
to print.

12. BATCHMAILER - PRINTING ENVELOPES IN QUANTITY
===============================================================================
A. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
BatchMailer provides an easy way to print the Address List on envelopes. Most
mass letter addressing on a laser printer simply has the computer feed the
data to the printer. If you do not have an automatic envelope feed mechanism,
you must hand-feed the envelopes and develop a good sense of timing. It is up
to the operator to keep up with the needs of the printer, while having little
control over what the laser printer is doing.
If you have automatic envelope trays, you usually have to hurry to refill or
insert a filled tray. A paper jam may mean that the entire list or parts of
it may have to be printed again, resulting in duplications and waste. There
is no way to stop the printing and resume it again. If the telephone rings,
you cannot quit to answer the phone. If the printer runs out of envelopes,
the printing may have to begin all over again. When finally the whole print
job is finished, it feels like you had run a race with your printer. It is
not something you may enjoy doing.
BatchMailer provides a way for you to control the laser printer and turn the
process around. It has the ability to send commands to the printer controller
and to place your printer into "idle" anywhere in the printing process. It
works at the speed you select. You have a choice of methods to use both for
manual and automatic envelope printing. You may even stop in the middle of a
print job and take a coffee break. If you so choose, you may inspect each
address on screen before printing it, or bypass it. You may stop or cancel
the printing whenever you wish.
You may use your address list in different ways. If you want only a few
addresses from the entire list, you may select only those you want, and skip
the rest. You may select from the label list, the non-label list, or the
entire Address List. The laser printer works for you, not against you, and it
is always under your control.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: The LABEL LIST are those addresses that are marked with a "Y" in the
lower right of the screen when an address is created or edited. The ShareWare
Version of Laser Letterhead plus has the label printing utility in the
envelope module. If you start your Address list and Label List when using the
Shareware Version of LLHP, you will still be able to use it in the Commercial
Edition that you will receive when you register LLHP. This is done by copying
Address.DAT and Counter.DAT from the Shareware Edition into your the same
directory as the Commercial Edition program files. BatchMailer will also
permit you to use the Label List on envelopes. See below for information.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If a paper jam occurs, BatchMailer will shift the laser into idle, sound a
tone, and wait for you to repair the problem. When you resume, the address
that was to be on the jammed envelope will be printed on the next envelope
after the jam is cleared. If you are using automatic feed trays, BatchMailer
will keep track of the number of envelopes in each tray. There may even be
different quantities in each tray. When a tray is empty, BatchMailer will
sound a musical scale, shift the laser into idle, and wait for you to refill
the tray. When you are ready, it will restart and pick up where it left off.
~
Page 26
You may leave the printing unattended if you have automatic feed trays, and
BatchMailer will monitor the printer. If anything occurs that needs your
attention, BatchMailer will again place the laser printer into idle, sound a
tone, and wait patiently until you can attend to it.
B. WHERE TO FIND BATCHMAILER
The BatchMailer Module is integrated into the Envelope Module. You should
press "E" for Envelopes at the Main Menu. This will take you to the Envelope
module and the Envelope Size Menu. The first step when printing an envelope,
is to select the envelope size.
C. SELECTING AN ENVELOPE SIZE
Any envelope size may be selected for BatchMailer, including The Adjustable
Envelope size. Mass printing on large catalog envelopes is as easy as
printing regular business size envelopes. (See the instructions for using
the Adjustable Envelope selection.) Only one envelope size may be used for
each batch print job. If another size is needed, print all those needed for
one size in one batch first, and then print those needed in another size
envelope in a later batch.
NOTE: IF THE MANILA CATALOG ENVELOPES ARE TOO THICK FOR YOUR LASER PRINTER TO
ACCEPT, TRY USING THE WHITE CATALOG ENVELOPES THAT ARE PRINTED ON A LIGHTER
STOCK. THE WHITE CATALOG ENVELOPES ARE LIGHT ENOUGH TO BE USED IN MOST LETTER
CASSETTES THAT WILL ALLOW AUTOMATIC FEED. THE ENVELOPE CASSETTE FOR THE
LASERJET SERIES II AND LASERJET III WILL ACCEPT THE WHITE 9.5" X 6.5" CATALOG
ENVELOPE.
D. THE PRINT SCOPE MENU
The Print Scope Menu appears immediately after the envelope size is selected.
This menu is in reference to how many address selections you intend to print.
Single Address Selection is the regular envelope printing process. Select B,
for the mass printing selection or BatchMailer. All menu screens after the
BatchMailer is selected from the Print Scope Menu will be for the BatchMailer
program.
E. FEED METHOD
The Feed Method may have been a selection that you rarely changed in the
regular envelope printing process. BatchMailer requires that you either
reselect a feed method, or again choose the same method as you had used with
the Single Address envelope printing. This is because BatchMailer's menu
screens will change according to the Feed Method Selection. If your laser
printer will utilize only manual feed, you may find that your paper tray may
accommodate a stack of envelopes so that you are able to use automatic feed.
(See the above NOTE about using catalog envelopes with automatic feed).
The Manual Adjustable and Auto Adjustable Env selections are not standard
Hewlett-Packard envelope sizes. They have been created for use with Laser
Letterhead plus and will take envelopes of any size. This would be the
selection to use if you are attempting to use your trays as automatic
envelope feed trays.
~
Page 27
F. SELECTING ADDRESS LIST PORTIONS
BatchMailer allows you to select which part of the Address List you would
like to print. You may select from three groups: Those addresses you marked
for the Label List, those not marked for the Label List, and the combined
total list of all addresses. However, this may be unnecessary, since you do
have the ability to go through the Address List and pick any address and
print it.
G. The Manual Modes
Manual and Automatic Tray Feed each have three modes of operation. Two of
these modes, pause mode and normal mode are similar for each. The second
mode, however, is quite different in both cases. The following is a
description of each mode:
1. Manual Feed Pause Mode: The laser engine is placed into idle between each
envelope. Since you are controlling the computer and the printer from the
keyboard, it is important that the laser printer be close to, or adjacent to,
the keyboard. This selection also gives you ability to examine the address
on-screen and to skip any that you do not want to print. You may also cancel
the printing at any time.
It is this mode that also allows to you go through the Address List and pick
and choose the addresses that you want to print. When finished, you merely
cancel the printing and end the session. If your use of the address list
requires that you use only several addresses at a time, you may find this
method easier than using the regular single address selection used with
ordinary envelope printing.
2. Manual Feed Timer Mode: The Timer Mode works best for printers that are
out of reach of the keyboard. BatchMailer will shift the laser printer into
idle for a specific period of time between printing each address. This idle
period, between 10 and 60 seconds, may be selected by the user.
The Timer Mode will display the address on the screen, but the user does not
have the ability to skip or bypass an address. It is assumed that the
keyboard is not within reach. Use Pause Mode if this type of Address List
editing is required.
3. Manual Feed Normal Mode: This mode sets the laser at its normal speed with
out any counters. BatchMailer will monitor the error codes generated by the
printer. If the laser runs out of envelopes or an envelope jam occurs, Batch-
Mailer will shift the printer into idle until the problem is resolved. In the
case of a jammed envelope, however, as in other modes, the last address will
be repeated on the next cleared envelope.
Since there are other more controllable modes available, this option is not
recommended for general use. For those who prefer to operate the laser
printer in a mode close to the normal uncontrolled manner of regular
printing without BatchMailer, it is available, but with safeguards.
~
Page 28
H. THE AUTOMATIC FEED TRAY MODES
Lasers having automatic feed envelope trays or bins require a different type
of handling than manual feed lasers. Here the concern is how many envelopes
are in the tray and this is usually not easy to calculate while the printer
is working. Some software will abort printing if the "timeout" print time is
exceeded. If you have spent too much time filling trays, the entire process
must start again.
BatchMailer does not use the "timeout" method that almost all other software
depends upon. Therefore, even when the printer is batch printing with all
trays loaded, the laser may be shifted into idle and held there indefinitely.
In addition, BatchMailer keeps track of the number of envelopes that have
been printed and how many are left in the trays. When it gets to the last
one, it sounds a musical scale and switches the laser printer into idle. You
may take as long as you wish to change trays or replace envelopes. When
ready, press a key, and the laser starts up again.
If there is a paper jam or you miscounted the envelopes in the tray, Batch-
Mailer sounds a different tone, and holds the laser in idle, while you take
care of the matter. Then, it gently starts and resumes where it left off.
1. Automatic Feed Pause Mode: The Automatic Feed Pause Mode is similar to the
Manual Feed Pause Mode, except it has the luxury of not having to insert
envelopes into the laser. You may position yourself at a desk and control a
laser across the room. You may examine each address on-screen, and skip any
that you wish to omit from that printing.
2. The Automatic Feed Tray Mode: The Automatic Tray Mode is for those times
when you have a specific address list that must be printed as quickly as
possible from beginning to end. It has been optimized for speed and to take
advantage of anything that your computer may contribute to enhance its
abilities. If your computer has additional extended or expanded memory
available, BatchMailer with utilize it.
BatchMailer makes one pass through your laser and loads as much of the
program and the Address List into memory as is available. If no extended or
expanded memory is available, it will use conventional memory. As a result,
the first address will print slower than those after it. All subsequent
passes are done at your laser's highest page per minute rating, while
BatchMailer keeps count of the envelopes in the tray. When the tray is empty,
a musical scale sounds, and the laser printer is placed into idle while you
fill or exchange the tray. When a key is pressed, off it goes again.
Initially you must enter the number of envelopes that you are placing into
the tray. Every time the tray is refilled you will be asked how many you
have placed in the tray. However, you need not place the same number of
envelopes into it. However, it is important to enter the exact number of
envelopes placed into that particular tray.
If your count is off, BatchMailer is very forgiving. It will place the laser
printer into idle when it detects that the tray is empty and tell you that
there is a problem. You will have to refill the tray at that time.
~
Page 29
3. Automatic Feed Normal Mode: The Automatic Normal Mode uses no counters or
tray filling pauses. BatchMailer does, however, monitor your error codes in
the printer. If a paper/envelope jam occurs or the tray runs out of
envelopes, BatchMailer will detect it and shift the printer into idle until
the problem is repaired. Like the Manual Normal Mode, this is close to
operating the laser without BatchMailer and is not recommended except for
those who prefer to count and keep track of the trays themselves.
If you decide to register Laser Letterhead plus, you will receive a printed
Handbook containing detailed instructions and illustrations showing you how
to use BatchMailer. Unfortunately, a Handbook on disk will not permit the
use of illustrations.

13. PRINTING MAILING LABELS
===============================================================================
When you create a new address or edit an old one, there is a box at the lower
right of the screen marked LABEL?. If you answer "Y" for yes, this address
will be placed on the label list. The label list is a part of the regular
Address list that is set aside for printing labels.
The label printing utility is located in the Envelope Module. The Envelope
Size Menu has a selection "N>o Envelope: Print Selected Mailing Labels." The
"Selected Mailing Labels" are those in the Mailing List that you have marked
with a "Y" for LABEL?. Select "N" and you will be taken directly to label
printing. The following screen will appear:
Print__Set(s) of Labels.
Is the Laser Printer Ready? Y>es
or, R>eturn to Prior Program:[ ]
18 Labels to Print
You are informed of how many labels you have marked for label printing.
Across the bottom of the screen also note:
"Use 4"x1" 2-Across 20 Labels/Sheet - Labels for Laser Printers"
From perforation to perforation, this label size is 4 1/4" x 1" and is the
same as the Avery #5261. Avery laser labels are slightly shorter in length
due to vertical gaps between the columns of labels. There is no exposed
adhesive in these gaps and they are specifically constructed for laser
printers. Hewlett-Packard recommends using Avery labels in their LaserJet
printers. Do not use labels made for copiers or dot-matrix printers.
This size will give you 20 labels for each sheet and is less expensive
than using larger labels. The drawback is that if 5 lines are used for
each label, the last line comes close to the bottom of the label. Most
businesses will undoubtedly opt for the lower cost over the symmetry of
the white space around the printed label. However, if that is a factor,
you may use only 4 lines for addresses that are marked for labels.
For the above 18 labels, you would only need one sheet of 20 labels.
If you would like to add several labels to the list, you may back out
now by pressing R, and then use the EDIT feature on the Address List
Maintenance Menu to edit your Mailing List and add more labels to the
label list.
Notice that the quantity of labels above is measured in SETS. This means
that if you request 2 sets, the printer will print duplicate sheets of
EACH page of 20 labels. Unlike the Return Address labels where you are
requesting sheets of identical labels, you are asked here how many
complete sets of 18 labels you want.
~
Page 31
Before printing the labels, it is often wise to print out the labels on
plain paper so you may see how they will appear. If you do so, take the
opportunity to edit the labels carefully, so you will not waste any or
incur returned mail on any that contain errors.
Also be aware that you will be using COURIER 10, an internal font, for
this printout. COURIER 10 is a good font for this purpose, since it
produces an easy-to-read address that does not have to match the
letterhead or return address. You need not make any changes in SetUp for
this printing. COURIER 10 is selected by the program. Your printing
quantity is not restricted to 99 labels but whatever number you have
marked for Address Labels. Only the number of SETS is restricted to 99.
~

14. THE SETUP PROGRAM ON THE MAIN MENU
===============================================================================
Press "S" for SetUp from the Main Menu, or move the highlighted bar to
SetUp and strike ENTER. You will then see the 4 Selections for the SetUp
Programs. Only an outline will appear here since each line of the SetUp
program is handled in detail later on in the Handbook. This brief summary
below also appears there, but that section contains detailed instruction
for each entry line.
1. Basic SetUp - Screen #1
Word Processor information, Port, Extended/Expanded Memory, and the
temporary erasable directory; How you want the date to appear on letters,
and which typefaces you want the program to transform into bold type;
filling in fields as you want them printed; the letter and envelope slogan
or phrase and what type of graphics (or none) that you want with them.
2. Font SetUp - Screen #2
A mnemonic description of each printed line and entry fields for the soft
font or cartridge you wish to use for that line.
3. PCX Images, Logos, or Watermarks and Printing Locations - Screen #3
a. Regular Letterhead Logo, Business and Personal, totaling 4 Image Files.
b. Only Logo, Business and Personal, a total of 6 Image Files.
c. Special Designed Letterhead, Business and Personal, 6 Image Files.
A combination of up to 16 different Logos, Images, and Watermarks may be
used. Actually, these are locations for the images that you may have. You
do not need anywhere near 16 images. Three to six images could be located
in 16 positions on 3 different types of letterheads in a business and
personal version. All locations require two coordinates in inches:
a. down from the top margin,
b. from the left margin to the right.
Measurements are accurate to 1/1000th of an inch. If you register the
program, you will receive an automatic conversion module that will also
let you use centimeters or inches.
If you have 2 megabytes or more of laser RAM, you may pretty well use all
the images you wish. If your laser printer has only 512K of RAM, do not
plan to make great use of the PCX image files. You will need at least one
megabyte of printer RAM to accommodate your soft fonts and one Only Logo
letterhead. You will not be able to use the watermarks with the Only Logo
letterhead unless you have almost two megabytes of laser printer RAM.
4. Laser Graphics and Text Setup - Screen #4
a. Regular Letterhead: Select baseline design or letterhead box frame type;
if shading is selected, degree of shading from 0% (white) to 100% (black)
may used. All between 0 and 100 are varying shades of gray.
~
Page 33
b. Only Logo Letterhead: Position the date, personal name and business
title, if used. The positions may even be within the letterhead image.
Using 99.999 for the date's horizontal position will automatically center
it at the vertical position chosen.
c. Special Design Letterhead: Position the letterhead body of text on a
horizontal plane on the page or automatically center it; separate settings
required for manually set business and personal versions; select graphics
for base, if one is used; turn base upright for a vertical bar; position
date and personal name and business title; Using 99.999 for the date's
horizontal position will automatically center it at the chosen vertical
position; all degrees of shading are selectable. 100% is solid black and
will obscure any printing in the same area.
d. Envelope: Select graphics for baseline under return address with lines,
shaded bar, or a patterned bar; all degrees of shading are selectable.

15. THE DOS SHELL OR GATEWAY
==============================================================================
The DOS Shell or gateway permits almost any program to be run from inside
Laser Letterhead plus. This is especially important if you have downloaded
fonts and have already gone through the first pass on the printer. All
subsequent passes will now be much quicker, but if you leave the program,
you will have to go through the initial first pass again.
The DOS Shell makes it possible to "leave" the program, run other programs,
and then return to Laser Letterhead plus and be able to pick up right where
you left off. (If you need only to use your DOS based word processor, use
the word processor selection on the Main Menu after you have installed it
in SetUp).
Running other programs from within a program is often a hazardous process
with many shells, but not with Laser Letterhead plus. When you use the DOS
Shell or gateway, Laser Letterhead plus is placed into extended or expanded
memory (or saved to the disk if you do not have enough extended or expanded
memory). All but a small 11K is tucked away, so large programs may run
easily from the gateway.
When the program starts up it sets aside an area that it may use if there
is no expanded or extended memory available. This is the directory WORKAREA
(unless you have changed the name in SetUp). Even if you do have the memory
available, the directory will be created in the event that memory runs out.
If the WORKAREA directory is destroyed, or inadvertently deleted while the
program is running, the program will recreate it. If more room is needed or
the program estimates that greater writing room may be required, an
emergency directory will be opened called LLHPV3.
When you leave the program, all files in these directories are deleted and
the directories themselves are removed leaving no trace of their former
existence. The files that were created in these directories may total
around 500K or more. If you do not have the extra memory, be certain that
you have at least this much extra temporary disk space.

==============================================================================
16. CALLING UP YOUR WORD PROCESSOR FROM THE MAIN MENU
==============================================================================
Laser Letterhead is shipped with a dummy screen installed as the word
processor. When you call up the word processor, this screen will read as
follows:
- PLEASE NOTE -
Your Word Processor may be installed here.
Go to the SetUp program, call up the Basic
SetUp Screen #1. Remove all the information
on line #1 for the Word Processor. Insert
the Drive, Directory, and File name that
calls up your word processor. Then you may
delete WORDPROC.EXE from the directory.
Press Any Key to Continue
The above instructions are for DOS based word processors. Windows 3.0
users may call up Windows from within Laser Letterhead plus, but if you
have Windows 3.1 you will not be able to do so. The following instructions
apply only for Windows 3.0 users and should be not be followed if you have
Windows 3.1 or higher:
You may run any Windows 3.0 application from inside Laser Letterhead plus.
Both programs may use HIMEM.SYS together if you have DOS 5.0 or later.
For example, if you use Word for Windows, there are two ways of entering it
into SetUp. One is to use WIN to call up Windows first. Then you may select
your word processor icon or any other Windows program from inside Windows.
The other is to call up the word processor directly. You must first create
a batch file that will do this for you.
It is easy to create a batch file with DOS 5.0. Use the Edit or line editor
that comes with DOS 5.0. Think of a good name to call your batch file, as
you will use it to call up both Windows and your word processor. We will
call it "WORDPRO". It cannot be over 8 characters long. It's file ending is
"BAT". Type the following at the command line:
EDIT WORDPRO.BAT
The screen will flicker a few times and EDIT will come up. Then type the
following at the top-left of the screen:
WIN WINWORD
WIN is the command to call up Windows. WINWORD is the command to call up
Word for Windows. Place the command name of your word processor in place
of WINWORD, if it is not Word for Windows. Those two words are all you need
in the batch file.
~
Page 36
Now, press the ALT key to highlight the FILE selection menu bar at the top
of the screen. Press the down arrow key, and the FILE MENU will pop down.
Press S for SAVE. This creates your batch file. The FILE MENU will pop back
up. Press ALT again, then down arrow, and X to EXIT the EDIT program.
To test your batch file, type WORDPRO at the command line. Windows should
come up and if the name of your word processor is correct, that will
come up also. If you have to make corrections to your batch file, merely
type EDIT WORDPRO.BAT and go through the above again.
Go into Laser Letterhead plus, Basic SetUp, and enter at item #1, the
name of the drive where Windows is located. For the Windows Directory, use
WIN. For the FILE entry, type WORDPRO. Press CTRL + W to save your entry,
and answer Y for Yes that all is correct. Press R to return at all menus
until you are back at the Main Menu. Press the Word Processor selection,
and both Windows and your word processor should come up.
Whenever you select your word processor from the Main Menu, you may use any
of Windows applications along with your word processor. If may use all
features of Windows, including exiting to the DOS prompt. When you exit
from Windows, you will again be back inside Laser Letterhead plus.

17. Selecting A Feed Method - Function Key <F8>
==============================================================================
Function key <F8> is used to select the proper feed method. The feed
methods available to you may differ from those described below. This varies
widely in compatible laser printers as well as some models of the LaserJet.
The program, therefore, uses all commands available in the Level IV PCL
command language, and if an error in selection occurs, will attempt to find
the command nearest to your selection for your laser printer.
If you are in the letterhead section when you press this function key you
will see this screen:
Paper Feed Method
1. Manual Paper Feed
2. Automatic Paper Feed
3. Tray 1 or MP Feed
4. Tray 2 or LC Tray
5. Paper Deck Feed
Select One Number:[ ]
If you have a LaserJet 500 plus, Tray 1 and Tray 2 options are available.
A Series II-III utilizes Manual Feed and Automatic Tray Feed. In addition,
the Series IIP-IIIP supports LC Tray Only (Optional Lower Cassette Tray).
Automatic Tray Feed is the same as the MP Tray or Multipurpose Tray on the
Series IIP-IIIP or the Control Panel setting for Tray: BOTH, if you have
the Optional Lower Cassette. The error system does a good job finding the
correct method, but if it fails, an error message may result.
The envelope section will display the following:
Envelope Feed Method
1. Manual Env Feed Slot
2. Manual Adjustable Env
3. Auto Adjustable Env
4. Auto Upper or MP Tray
5. Auto Lower or LC Tray
6. Auto Paper Deck Bin
7. Auto Env Feeder Bin
Select One Number:[ ]
If you have a Series II printer, unless you purchased an Envelope Tray Feed
Cassette (#92295F), you do not have Automatic Tray Feed, and must select
Manual Envelope Feed. Or, if you have a Series IIP you must have purchased
the Optional Lower Cassette Tray (#33472A) with Envelope Tray (#92275F) to
utilize automatic feed for envelopes from the Optional Lower Cassette Tray.
The Series III and IIID also has an optional automatic feed for envelopes.
Selection of feed methods for paper is separate from the envelope feed
selection, since most users will have different options and needs. When
you are in the letterhead section, what you have selected there will remain
as the default feed method until you change it. You may go to the envelope
section and use a different method, and that will be the default method
only for envelopes.
~
Page 38
Remember for either section, if you selected a Manual Feed and change your
mind at print time, press CONTINUE RESET (or a similar RESET key on your
printer) on the Control Panel to switch to Automatic Feed and override the
Manual selection.
After making your selection as to paper or envelope feed method, you will
be asked to confirm your selection and the screen will revert back to the
original program.
Remember that all the complicated job size settings and tray selections
are done here within Laser Letterhead plus. Do not attempt to use your
Control Panel settings, other than the above RESET, because the program
will over-ride those and replace them with what you have selected here.
When you are finished using Laser Letterhead Plus, all the default settings
you have in your original setup at the Control Panel will be returned just
as they had been prior to running the program. And, in the same manner when
you return to Laser Letterhead plus, the settings you had made when you
last used it, will be reinstated and sent to your laser printer.

18. SETTING UP AND PLACING YOUR DATA IN THE PROGRAM
==============================================================================
NOTE: If you are vision impaired and find the SetUp screens difficult to
read, you may request the Commercial Edition with the large font screen
driver.
SetUp is found in the Utility Menu. Press "U" on the Main Menu Screen. You
will then be in the Utility Menu. Press "S" for SetUp. You will then see
the 4 Selections for the SetUp Programs. These can be summarized as:
1. Basic SetUp - Screen #1
Word Processor information, Port, Extended/Expanded Memory, and the
temporary erasable directory; How you want the date to appear on letters,
and which typefaces you want the program to transform into bold type;
filling in fields as you want them printed; the letter and envelope slogan
or phrase and what type of graphics (or none) that you want with them.
2. Font SetUp - Screen #2
A mnemonic description of each printed line and entry fields for the soft
font or cartridge you wish to use for that line.
3. PCX Images, Logos, or Watermarks and Printing Locations - Screen #3
a. Regular Letterhead Logo, Business and Personal, a total of 4 Image
Files.
b. Only Logo, Business and Personal, a total of 6 Image Files.
c. Special Designed Letterhead, Business and Personal, 6 Image Files.
A combination of up to 16 different Logos, Images, and Watermarks may be
used. Actually, these are locations for the images that you may have.
You do not need anywhere near 16 images. Three to six images could be
located in 16 positions on 3 different types of letterheads in a business
and personal version. All locations require two coordinates in inches:
a. down from the top margin, and,
b. from the left margin to the right.
Measurements are accurate to 1/1000th of an inch.
4. Laser Graphics and Text Setup - Screen #4
a. Regular Letterhead: Select baseline design or letterhead box frame
type; if shading is selected, degree of shading from 0% (white) to 100%
(black) may used. All between 0 and 100 are varying shades of gray.
b. Only Logo Letterhead: Position the date, personal name and business
title, if used. The positions may even be within the letterhead image.
Using 99.999 for the date's horizontal position will automatically center
it at the vertical position chosen.
~
Page 40
c. Special Design Letterhead: Position the letterhead body of text on a
horizontal plane on the page or automatically center it; separate settings
required for manually set business and personal versions; select graphics
for base, if one is used; turn base upright for a vertical bar; position
date and personal name and business title; Using 99.999 for the date's
horizontal position will automatically center it at the chosen vertical
position; all degrees of shading are selectable.
d. Envelope: Select graphics for baseline under return address, using
lines, shaded bar, or a patterned bar; all degrees of shading are
selectable.
=============== USING THE KEYBOARD TO MOVE AROUND THE SETUP PROGRAM ===========
- Notes About Navigating Through SetUp -
A. Use <UP or DOWN> Arrow Keys to go from one field to the next(UP =
backwards, DOWN = forward), and the LEFT or RIGHT Arrow Keys to move back
and forth inside the field. The <ENTER> or <RETURN> keys move from field to
field and OUT OF THE LAST FIELD ON EACH SETUP SCREEN. <CTRL> + <W> will
save all entries and bring the cursor down and out of all fields.
B. All YES answers are entered as "1". All NO answers are entered as "2".
In most cases you will be prompted with Y=1 N=2 unless spacing is
critical.
C. If you want to leave SETUP and EXIT the program, move the cursor to the
next field and press the ESCAPE key. Exit SETUP and SAVE your entries.
Press "R" until you return to the Main Menu, then press "D" for DOS SHELL.
You may then move to any directory on your computer and run most any
program. When through, type EXIT and you will be back at the Main Menu.
D. If no entries were made on a screen and you want to leave, press <ESC>
key and the cursor will come down to the bottom and you may EXIT. If you
have made entries into a field, move your cursor out of the last field you
changed and press ESCAPE. The cursor will come down and you may EXIT.
Always get out of a field you have changed before pressing ESCAPE, other-
wise the field will revert back to its prior setting (This is an UNDO
feature).

19. FILLING IN BASIC SETUP - SCREEN #1
==============================================================================
A-ADJUST Printer L>eft R>ight:L0.000 B-ADJUST RightEnd to L>eft R>ight:L0.000
If your laser printer is printing the Regular Letterhead too close to the
right or left margin you may adjust it. The R and L tells which way to
move the margin. For instance, set A to R1.000 and B to L1.000 and you are
using inches, the margins of the Regular Letterhead will move in 1 inch on
each side. If you are using the boxed letterhead, the box will be smaller.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
01-Word Processor Drive:C Directory:LETTER File:WORDPROC.EXE Port (LPT1): LPT1
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES MAY BE LEFT BLANK.
If you do NOT want to access your word processor from the Main Menu of
Laser Letterhead plus, LEAVE ALL FIELDS BLANK (Remove any information in
the field with the DELETE key). The Main Menu will reconfigure itself to
leave out the word processor selection. If you wish to place a DOS-based
word processor, enter the drive, directory and file that calls it up as
instructed. If you have DOS 5.0 or later, you may place a Windows 3.0
word processor here, but Windows 3.1 will not permit you to do this.
WORD PROCESSOR DRIVE: Enter the drive letter (A,B,C,or D, etc.). We have
entered "C" as an example. The program will know if this is a hard drive
or floppy diskette. Be aware that floppy diskettes run very slowly and
will slow down the program while anything is being read from or to them.
DIRECTORY: Place the directory name in this entry field. We are using
LETTER as the Directory. Laser Letterhead plus is shipped with a file
called WORDPROC.EXE. It merely puts up a screen with instructions for
placing your own word processor in its place. You may delete WORDPROC.EXE
after replacing it with your own word processor.
FILE: This is the name that you use to call up the word processor. If a
batch file (has "BAT" file ending) is used to call up the file, then use
that file name. It may contain switches that bring up the word processor
in a certain way. File ending .EXE is optional. For Windows 3.0 word
processors, place WIN here. When Windows comes up you may select the word
processor, or any other windows program icon. Windows 3.1 or higher will
NOT let you call up Windows from within Laser Letterhead plus.
PORT: If you leave this space empty, the program will insert "LPT1" as
your printing port. If this is not correct, you will not be able to
send your printing to the proper printer. LPT1 is your 1st parallel
printing port, LPT2 is the 2nd parallel printing port, etc. It is important
that you place the proper port in this space. Try LPT1 if you do not know
what port to use.
~
Page 42
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
02-Memory: Y=1 N=2: Use HIMEM.SYS?1 Use Extended?1 Reserve: 0K Use Expanded?1
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
CAUTION: IF YOU ARE USING A DISK CACHE THAT USES EXTENDED MEMORY, DO NOT
ALLOCATE ANY EXTENDED MEMORY FOR LASER LETTERHEAD PLUS, OR THE PROGRAM WILL
LOCK UP AND REQUIRE REBOOTING. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, DO NOT USE EXTENDED
MEMORY. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. PLACE 2 AFTER HIMEM.SYS? AND EXTENDED?...
EXPANDED MEMORY CACHES ARE NO PROBLEM. IF USING SMARTDRV.SYS WITH DOS 5.0,
USE THE /a SWITCH FOR EXPANDED MEMORY: DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 2048 1024 /a
IF YOU HAVE HIMEM.SYS AND WISH TO USE EXTENDED MEMORY, YOU MUST USE THE
SWITCH /int15=512 AFTER IT IN THE CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /int15=512
The RESERVE field is used to RESERVE extended memory for programs that
may not run from within Laser Letterhead plus unless some extended memory
is set aside. Not many require this setting. If you have a cache system
that uses extended memory, reserve an amount equal to the size of the
cache, or do not use extended memory at all.
A. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 3.+ INSTALLED AND PLAN TO ALWAYS ACCESS LLHP
PLUS FROM THE MENU INSIDE WINDOWS, FILL IN THE ENTRIES IN THIS MANNER:
Use HIMEM.SYS? 2 Use Extended? 2 Reserve: 0 Use Expanded? 1
Windows uses only extended Memory and you must let Windows allocate it to
any program running under Windows. Expanded memory, however, you may
utilize. How can you have expanded memory with Windows? If you have 4
megabytes of memory or more, convert some of that into "simulated expanded
memory" by copying the device driver EMM386.SYS in your windows package
into your root directory. Then place DEVICE=EMM386 1024 RAM after the
HIMEM.SYS driver in your Config.SYS file. Place the "Set" commands in
LP.BAT in your autoexec.bat file. SET EPATH=C:/PCLFONTS (PCLFONTS is the
name of the directory where soft fonts are located) and CLIPPER=V015 is
for the memory manager. If this is not done, you cannot download fonts.
-> THE LASER LETTERHEAD plus .PIF File in Windows: Request 1024K extended
memory required, and at least 512K of expanded memory. You must use a
PIF file to use LLHP from inside Windows 3.0, 3.1, or higher.
B. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 3.0 INSTALLED, BUT PLAN TO ACCESS LLHP FROM
OUTSIDE THE WINDOWS PROGRAM AND CALL UP WINDOWS 3.0 FROM THE MAIN MENU
INSIDE LASER LETTERHEAD PLUS (WINDOWS 3.1 WILL NOT LET YOU DO THIS):
Use HIMEM.SYS? 1 Use Extended? 1 Reserve: 0K Use Expanded?1
This will not interfere with Windows since you will not be using HIMEM.SYS
at the SAME TIME windows is using it. Laser Letterhead plus will not be
utilizing more than 11-12K of memory while Windows is running. RESERVE is
0. If you do use the Reserve setting, do not set ALL your available memory
on reserve or Laser Letterhead will not be able to use it. Programs will
almost always run from inside Laser Letterhead plus even if it has to
write to the disk.
~
Page 43
C. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WINDOWS 3.0 INSTALLED, AND DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR
MEMORY REQUIREMENTS ARE, select the following:
Use HIMEM.SYS? 2 Use Extended? 1 Reserve: 0 Use Expanded?1
This is the best all around setting if you do not have HIMEM.SYS in your
CONFIG.SYS file. If there is extended or expanded memory anywhere in your
system, it will be found and utilized. The RESERVE is 0, because most
programs that you may run that may use extended memory will compensate
if is not available. However, if you are using a disk cache that uses
extended memory, you must turn Use Extended? off by entering a 2.
D. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE IF YOU HAVE HIMEM.SYS OR ANY EXPANDED OR EXTEND
MEMORY, THEN SET ALL MEMORY AT 1 AND THE RESERVE AT 0.
REMEMBER --> IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF A SETTING, SET IT AT 1
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS WINDOWS 3.1 OR HIGHER FROM INSIDE LLHP. YOU MAY
ACCESS LASER LETTERHEAD PLUS FROM INSIDE WINDOWS 3.1 OR HIGHER.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03-Erasable Directory: WORKAREA on Drive: C 8
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY MAY BE LEFT BLANK. THE PROGRAM WILL FILL IT IN AUTOMATICALLY IF
YOU MAKE NO ENTRY.
Laser Letterhead works invisibly by creating a working subdirectory off its
current directory at start up time. You will see a brief message on the
top of the screen at that time. If the program runs out of extended or
expanded memory, or has no memory to access, it will quickly create a file
in this subdirectory and write to it. The size of the file is about 600K.
Nothing is ever lost in the transfer, but reading and writing to the
directory is slower than saving to memory. When you exit the program by
the "Quit" on the Main Menu, the file and the directory are quickly erased
and you would never know that it existed.
If you leave the directory field blank, the default name "WORKAREA" will
be used. If you leave the drive blank, the current drive will be used.
Insert another name in the above directory if:
A. You already have another subdirectory off the Laser Letterhead plus
directory with the identical name "WORKAREA".
B. You do not have enough disk space on the current disk, so that a file
the size of 600K would create a DOS error, "OUT OF DISKSPACE".
C. You elect to use floppy diskettes for all temporary save routines.
This requires at least a 720K 3.5" diskette, but a high density 1.2M or
1.4M may be required.
~
Page 44
-> You will find that diskettes operate very slowly even on fast 33mhz
computers. That is the main disadvantage. On the other hand, if you have
plenty of extended or expanded memory, the diskette would rarely, if ever,
be used. It is usually a bother to remember to insert a diskette in a
drive whenever you use Laser Letterhead plus.
D. You do not like the name WORKSPACE. This may be the most valid reason
over all of the above.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
04-Date: 1=US 2=UK 1 System Date:12/31/93
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
Use 1 if you want the date-format on all letterheads in American format:
January 23, 1993
or use 2 if you want the date-format in British or United Kingdom format:
23 January 1993
-> A date-format change will switch all dates to that format on display
screens and input fields as well as on the printed letterhead.
The system date of any AT type computer may be changed in SetUp without
exiting the program (If you do not have an AT type computer, this selection
will not be on the screen). Place any valid date (2/30/93 is not valid) in
this field and all dates printed will be changed along with your computer
system clock. Remember that you also have the opportunity to make a
temporary date change from the menu whenever you create a letterhead.
The entry here in SetUp is best used to correct a wrong computer date
without leaving the program.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05-Create Bold Typefaces: Y=1 N=2 Letterhead? Return Address? Mailing Address?
Letter Slogan? Envelope Slogan?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
You do not need to use bold typefaces since your laser can usually create a
bold typeface just as well. It is possible to use the same font as a
regular typeface AND bold typeface depending on where it is used. Place a
"1" after each question mark where you want to use bold typefaces. This is
specially nice when typefaces are not generally available in bold, such as
University Roman. Creating bold instead of using bold typefaces saves
laser RAM.
-> If you are already using bold typefaces, you will find that making them
bold on bold destroys some of their elegance as typefaces.
Creating bold applies only to typefaces, not PCX images.
~
Page 45
Hint: If undecided, try bold for the business letterhead and also the
envelope mailing address. Then see how the other typefaces look in
comparison.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
06-Should Business Address be on one line?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
This seems like a choice of little importance, but it can have quite an
impact on the computer generated or REGULAR letterhead. The Special Design
letterhead always places the address on two lines, while the ONLY LOGO
address is created apart from this program. Personal letterhead versions
are always two lines.
A computer generated Regular letterhead centered on one line appears as:
Ace Flying Machine and Zeppelin Company
123 East Broadway Street, South Hampton, Maine 20876-3602
Telephone 817-298-9812
The two line version will break the address up in this manner:
Ace Flying Machine and Zeppelin Company
123 East Broadway Street
South Hampton, Maine 20876-3602
Telephone 817-298-9812
The space required by the two types will be much the same, and the computer
will adjust the areas between the lines to match the baseline font height,
typeface, style, and stroke weight (within set tolerances) with allowances
for descenders (like in p or y) on all typefaces it is able to recognize.
This will make the two-line address slightly more compact, but well
balanced and distributed neatly throughout the area. The two types appear
very different artistically when the laser completes its task.
-> However, there are also other considerations. Most businesses in a given
area may use one or the other as a matter of convention. In areas where
many communities are more densely concentrated, a two-line address
emphasizes the city or town and immediately indicates in what community
the business is located.
~
Page 46
FILL IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS USING UPPER/LOWER CASE AS DESIRED...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
07-Personal Name
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
This is the name that will appear as the top line in the personal versions
of the letterhead. It will also be used as the name above the business
title. Decide just how you wish it to appear. You could use a complete
first, middle and last name, or select initials for the first or second
names. Mix upper and lower case. Some typefaces are intended to be mixed
and will appear strange in upper or lower case only (this is rather
important).
When the business letterhead is printed, you may elect to use it or NOT use
it from the menu.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
08-Business Title
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
The personal name and business title will both be in the same typeface,
and should be the smallest, 8 or 10 points at the most. Much of what is
said under Personal Name applies. Do not use uppercase unless the typeface
is readable in uppercase. For example, Old English, Old German, or Script
typefaces usually are not very readable if all are uppercase letters.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
09-Business Name
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
The business name is the lead line for the business version. Although the
font sizes will be discussed in the Font SetUp, remember that this line
will usually appear in larger type of 18 to 28 points (72 points to an
inch). It is the first line one looks at when the letter is opened. First
impressions are still the most lasting ones. The ampersand or "&" sign is
correct when used as "Simon & Sons" or "Johnson & Co."
This entry is also the line that is placed at the top of the Laser Letter-
head plus screen. It will appear at the top of most screens exactly as you
have entered it here.
~
Page 47
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10-Street
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
This line and the next, City|State|Zip, may depend a great deal on whether
you selected a two-line or one-line address for #6. A long address that
may exceed the width of the paper may be better on two lines. It is
possible, however, to include almost any information including suite
numbers and post office box numbers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-City|State|Zip
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
If possible, avoid abbreviations unless space does not permit a full word
or convention dictates otherwise. Generally, St. for Street, No. for North,
So. for South, are better not be used if you can use the entire word.
Remember to use a full zip code, i.e., 33709-3601, if possible, in the
United States. Also remember to add the country if business is done inter-
nationally. Follow the proper conventions of the area and country where
the business is located.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12-Telephone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY MAY BE LEFT BLANK.
Previous versions of Laser Letterhead plus automatically added the word
"Telephone" before the number. Version 3.0 omits this addition in the
event you do not wish to place a telephone number on your stationery.
Small businesses who operate out of a home address, may not want to use
their home phone as a business phone, or they may want to receive mail,
but not utilize the residence telephone.
If no telephone information is entered, the line may be left blank or
used for other text, such as business hours. Since the computer expects
to find something in this position, the finished letterhead will be better
proportioned if some text entered.
If you wish to enter a telephone number, you may enter the word "Telephone"
prior to the number or just simply list the numbers, extensions, fax, etc.
The field will take any printable key strokes, including ASCII characters.
-> ASCII characters are entered by holding down the <ALT> key and striking
the numerical ASCII code on the right-hand key pad, if you have one.
<ALT> + 205 draws a double line or <ALT> 196 draws a single line. Your
Laser printer must be set on a symbol set that includes lines (PC-8).
~
Page 48
Whatever is entered here will be centered or left justified so that it will
fit in with the rest of the letterhead. The entry field for telephone is
as large as any other field in the letterhead and may contain much more
than just a single phone number.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13-Letter Slogan
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY MAY BE LEFT BLANK.
The letter slogan is generally a short phrase that you may place anywhere
on the letterhead page. "Anywhere" means between the top and bottom margins
and the left and right margins. You may incorporate it into the letterhead,
the baseline graphics, or center it at the bottom of page. You may also box
it, frame it, shade it, place it inside graphics, or just leave it as
simple letters. You may leave it off entirely or use a different one on
the envelope.
The slogan may be selected from the menu when you print the letterhead.
Rather than leave it blank, place most any short phrase that explains your
business or advertises a product, such as "Try Our Vanilla Ice Cream" or
"Ask About Our Consulting Services". When you select it from the menu, the
slogan message will come on the screen. You may then go back and deselect
it if you wish.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14-Envelope Slogan
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY MAY BE LEFT BLANK.
This slogan is optionally placed on the envelope when it is printed. All
the attributes of the letter slogan above apply to the envelope slogan.
It may be located anywhere on the envelope.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15-Slogan Positions: Letter-Hor:99.999 Ver:99.999 Envelope-Hor:0.350 Ver:3.000
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK.
99.999 IN "HOR" AND "VER" LETTER ENTRIES WILL PLACE SLOGAN AT BOTTOM-CENTER
OF LETTER PAGE. NO EQUIVALENT SETTING FOR ENVELOPE.
Leaving any position or coordinates blank will give them a 0.000 position.
A 0.000 in both horizontal and vertical positions will place the location
in the upper left corner of the letter or envelope. You might as well put
in a real position.
All positions require two coordinates: HORIZONTAL and VERTICAL The hori-
zontal is measured from the left margin to the right. The vertical is down
from the top margin. All measurements are in inches with fractions trans-
lated to decimal format:
~
Page 49
1/16 inch = .062 inch 1/8 inch = .125 inch 1/4 inch = .25
2/16 inch = .125 inch 2/8 inch = .25 inch 1/2 inch = .5
3/16 inch = .187 inch 3/8 inch = .375 inch 3/4 inch = .75
4/16 inch = .25 inch 4/8 inch = .5 inch
5/16 inch = .312 inch 5/8 inch = .625 inch
6/16 inch = .375 inch 6/8 inch = .75 inch
7/16 inch = .437 inch 7/8 inch = .875 inch
8/16 inch = .5 inch 8/8 inch = 1.0 inch
9/16 inch = .562 inch
10/16 inch = .625 inch
11/16 inch = .687 inch
12/16 inch = .75 inch
13/16 inch = .812 inch
14/16 inch = .875 inch
15/16 inch = .937 inch
16/16 inch = 1.0 inch
CENTIMETER FORMAT is also available if you register the program. You will
receive a built in module that will permit you to shift from inches to
centimeters, and back.
For some it is easier to make approximate measurements the first time they
set up the positions, then adjust them after a test print out. You will
need a ruler that will measure to the accuracy you want. The plastic
see-through type is often the easiest to use.
Note: If you are visually impaired, request the Commercial Edition with
the large font screen driver. It will help when entering these numbers.
The 99.999 position will automatically center the LETTER slogan on the
horizontal plane on the page. The 99.999 vertical position will place the
slogan on the lowest point on the page (with all graphics, including the
shadow).
The 99.999 position does not apply to the ENVELOPE slogan. In addition,
the program will not allow the slogan to cross the left or top margins
or beyond the "0" positions. Any part of the slogan or graphics that is
off the page to the right or below the bottom margin, will not be printed.

Page 50
You may leave the slogan lettering as it is or place a box around it. This
is not to be confused with an outside frame fill Border in #20. This box
closely frames the lettering of the slogan. Outside this box, you may have
a graphic fill pattern as chosen in #19, then the outer frame fill border
as selected in #20 surrounds the graphics.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17-% Shading 0-100:10
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The box for the slogan may have shading. You may select the amount of
shading you desire. 8% to 20% is light, 21% to 35% is medium, dark is
anything beyond.
If you choose 100%, it will totally blacken the box. Light or medium is
generally used.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18-Border 0=none 1-- 2== 3...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This selection is for the type of border you want around the slogan text: a
single line, double line or dotted line. This is similar to the choice for
the frame edge around the graphics.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19-Frame Fill Pattern 0=None 1-line 2|vert 3/angle 4\angle 5#box 6#weave:1
Add Shadow?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pattern is placed outside the box of the slogan and may be framed in
with the selection of #20.
This pattern selection is one you will see again in other setup sections.
They are the basic drawing graphics that the laser printer can perform:
1-horizontal lines, 2-vertical lines 3-angle lines /// 4-angle lines \\\
5-horizontal and vertical lines crossing in a box pattern 6-angle lines
crossing in a woven pattern.
Add Shadow - is a shadow effect around the frame of the box. If only a box
is around the text, the shadow effect will be behind the box. If a larger
frame encloses a pattern fill, then the shadow is behind the larger framed
pattern fill.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laser Graphics for Envelope Slogan: # 21 through #25 . . .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#21 to #25 are identical to #16-20 above dealing with the slogan to be
placed on the letter. This slogan may be placed on the envelope. Fill
them in the same or differently. Remember that the envelope may not leave
as much room. What is appropriate for one, may not be for the other.
~
Page 51
It is strongly recommended that you experiment with the various pattern
fills and frame/box options, including borders. It is impossible to
adequately describe them without illustrations. You should actually see
the output so that you are able to decide how you want to use them.
If you do not have enough laser printer RAM for PCX images, make the most
of the laser graphics and slogans. The graphics are built into your laser,
and the slogans are part of your downloaded font space.

NOTE: THE SOFT FONTS MAY BE PLACED IN ANY DIRECTORY THE USER SELECTS DURING
THE INSTALL PROGRAM. IF YOU CHANGE THIS LOCATION, YOU MUST REINSTALL THE
THE PROGRAM OR CHANGE THE SET EPATH STATEMENT IN THE LP.BAT FILE. LP.BAT
FILE CONTAINS THE STATEMENT:
SET EPATH=C:\LETTER
THIS MEANS THAT THE FONTS ARE IN THE DIRECTORY "LETTER". CHANGE THIS WITH
AN EDITOR OR THE DOS EDLIN EDITOR TO THE DIRECTORY OR PATH TO THAT
DIRECTORY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO RUN THE PROGRAM. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING
ELSE IN THE LP.BAT FILE. THE EASIEST WAY TO CHANGE THE LP.BAT FILE, IS TO
RE-INSTALL THE PROGRAM. THE INSTALL PROGRAM WILL CHANGE IT FOR YOU.
YOU MAY PLACE THE SET EPATH=C:\LETTER STATEMENT IN YOUR AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE.
IF YOU DO THIS, EITHER REMOVE IT FROM THE LP.BAT FILE OR BE SURE THE TWO
AGREE AS TO THE DIRECTORY. YOU WILL NOT NEED IT IN BOTH LOCATIONS. IF YOU
RUN LLHP FROM WINDOWS 3.0, PLACE THIS STATEMENT IN THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE.
How to use PCL Bitmap Soft Fonts
Soft fonts are those you may purchase on diskettes or may be created by
a font generator such as Bitstream's Fontware. PCL Fonts for HP LaserJet
and compatibles are in fixed format. That is, your printer cannot change
the size of the fonts to a smaller one or a larger one. You must choose
the typeface you want and the point size, and then download the font into
the Laser's memory. Do not attempt to use outline fonts; they will not work.
Most laser printers have at least 512K of memory. Actually, this gives
you slightly under 400K to use for soft fonts. Fonts vary in the amount of
memory they require, but in general, one set of 60 point fonts would
probably use all 400K, and then some.
The fonts you will be using for Laser Letterhead plus are much smaller
than 60 points. The largest is perhaps 25 points in a narrow font, such as
University Roman. A Broadway or Cooper Black font is much wider, and would
run off the margins if you were to use a 25 point font. Select fonts that
look well as a letterhead. Simply use trial and error until you get it
right.
If you are new to using fonts, do not be hesitant to try different sizes
and typefaces.
Each set of soft fonts comes in one file for the particular point size and
orientation. Most have a file name code system to read the typeface, Stroke
Weight (bold, medium/normal, light), orientation, point size (1/72"), and
sometimes the symbol set. Get to know the code system of the fonts you
are using, so you can select the proper font for each line of the letter-
head or envelopes.
NOTE: YOU MAY PRESS FUNCTION KEY <F10> TO VIEW THE CURRENT DIRECTORY.
IF YOUR SOFT FONTS ARE KEPT WITH THE PROGRAM FILES, YOU MAY VIEW
THEM ANYTIME WHILE PLACING FONTS IN FONT SETUP.
~
Page 53
Letterhead Proportional Spaced Fonts
This is the most difficult part of SetUp. If you have any problems with
the program, it will most likely be traced to this section. Read it care-
fully. Note that cartridge fonts are inserted differently than soft fonts.
If you get an error when attempting the first download, go back to this
section and check the fonts and their spelling. The odd names given fonts
and the use of zeros and alphabetical "O"s often cause a problem.
If the point sizes are wrong, it will be obvious when you print your
letterhead or envelopes. When you get it right, make a copy of the fonts
in Setup by printing a font print out from the Utilities Menu.
The next entries will deal with the letterhead envelope fonts. They
are a part of your contribution to the design of the letterhead and deter-
mines the success of the entire letterhead. Note that each font is
numbered and has short name which may be used to identify the lines that
use it (but not necessarily pronounce).
You must very carefully place either cartridge fonts, soft fonts, or both
in these spaces. If you have cartridge fonts, read the section below on
how to place them in this area. Soft fonts are those that must be
downloaded before you can use them. Function Key <F9> will automatically
download soft fonts once they are properly placed in this setup program.
Function Key <F10> will let you view the current directory.
Letterhead = Proportional Spaced Fonts with Portrait Orientation
The font screen uses short mnemonics to describe the lines the font will
print on the letterhead and envelope:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#1-BNameCL...:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
#1-BNameCL = Business Name for both the centered and left justified letter-
head. This is also the Business name for the Special Designed Letterhead.
This font may be from 18 to 28 points, depending on the typeface. A thin
typeface such as University Roman may go up to 28 points. A wide typeface
would only be 18 points. This may take some experimentation on your part.
Remember that there are 72 points to an inch.
Take care to spell names correctly, otherwise downloading will be inter-
rupted by an error message. Common errors are reading zero for an "O" or
confusing the number "one" with lower case "L".
If you are using HP cartridges A to Z, you may place that cartridge name as
the far right entry after "Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:" See the
section on using cartridge fonts.
Do not forget to place the double quotes "" in that space if you are using
soft fonts.
~
Page 54
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#2-PNameCL AddC.:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
#2-PNameCL AddC = Personal Name for Personal Letterhead and address for the
centered address (if selected) on the business letterhead. This is the
font used for the personal version of the Special Designed letterhead.
This is generally from 16 to 20 points. Again, it depends upon the typeface
and what appears good to you.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#3-AddL PhoDatCl: YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
#3-AddL PhoDatCL = Left justified address and the business two line
address, and also the phone and date for both centered and left justified
letterheads.
This is usually from 16 to 18 points. Since the two line address takes
more space vertically, you may have to adjust to the proper size that
looks best.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#4-PNameTitleCL.:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
#4-PNameTitleCL = Personal Name and business title for the centered and
left justified letterhead and the Special Designed letterhead. This is a
small font, usually of 6 to 10 points. It should be in an easy-to-read
typeface, such as Helvetica or Times Roman.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#5-Letter Slogan:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
This one needs no translation. Almost any typeface that suits your purpose
may be used. If it is boxed in, a point size of about 16 is almost maximum.
Without the box, you may go to any size that will fit. If a frame is
needed with larger fonts, use the larger frame instead of only the box for
the text. The graphics alone with no box or frames often fit the purpose.
Note that the graphics of the slogan frame will fit right into the
letterhead baseline, if the graphics chosen are the same. All graphics fit
into an "invisible" grid over the page and will match if joined.
~
Page 55
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
#6-Fontext = This is NOT a PROPORTIONAL font:It MUST be a FIXED WIDTH font.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DO NOT LEAVE THIS ENTRY BLANK:
TextWriter uses a FIXED WIDTH font such as COURIER 10 that come as an
INTERNAL font with all laser printers. As shipped, LLHP has this font in
this position. You may enter a downloaded FIXED WIDTH font if you prefer,
but you must indicate in the far right box a "" for soft font.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#7-ReturnPBName.:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
#6-ReturnPBName = Return address personal or business name. This typeface
is usually one that will match the letterhead. A typeface like University
Roman will use about a 14 to 16 point size. This is strictly trial and
error with most typefaces. This font is just for the name. The remainder of
the return address will be in a somewhat smaller typeface.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#8-ReturnAddress:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
This is for the remainder of the return address. The typeface is usually
the same as the first line, but in a smaller point size. The ranger is
usually from 10 to 14 points. Note that this typeface and the one above are
also used if you print return address labels.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#9-Mail Address.:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The mail address is the address of the individual or business who receives
the letter. This can be a totally different typeface. For example, if you
are using University Roman for the return address, use Fritz Quadrata, or
Helvetica for the mailing address. It should be a typeface that is easy for
the Post Office to read. Times Roman also works very well at 12 points.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#10-Envel Slogan.:YOURFONT.XXX -> Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The envelope slogan and letter slogan use different fonts not only because
the orientation is not the same, but so that you can vary your message and
utilize a different style font. What was said about using graphics in the
~
Page 56
letter font, may apply differently here. 14 or 16 points may be maximum
if you box in the text, and 16 to 18 points if you do not. Use your best
judgment.
Each soft font must be entered as above with its file extension (XXX) or
whatever file extensions your soft fonts use. You must also indicate that
they are soft fonts by inserting "" in the cartridge letter position.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to use Cartridge Fonts
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A. Using Hewlett-Packard's older A-Z cartridges as an example, select the
proper font and size. Do not select non-proportional fonts: They should be
proportional to work with consistency. Plug the cartridge firmly into the
socket. Those lasers having two slots, be aware that one of the slots
usually has priority over the other. Use the highest priority socket. On
the HP LaserJet Series II-III, this is the left side.
Type the font name and cartridge into SetUp:
Example - Tmsrmn 10 from Cartridge P
Step 1. Type in TMSRMN 10 after the # and name
Step 2. Type in where it says Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:
Enter like this:
#4-PNameTitleCL.:TMSRMN 10 Cartridge AZ or "" if Soft Font:
That is all there is to it! Downloading is not necessary. Below is a list
of font names that must be in SetUp for HP Cartridges or Third Party
Cartridges. In your Manual you received with your 3rd Party Cartridge, you
probably have a Comparable HP Cartridge Font listing that lists each font
and the letter of the HP cartridge with which it is compatible.
If you have 25 Cartridges in One! by Pacific Data Products, see Table 3-3,
Page 3-6 áof their manual...some of these work, some do not. U cartridge
listings will work fine; Z cartridge listings do not. If all you have is
this plug-in cartridge, you can find enough proper size HELV to make a
letterhead.
The following list of fonts as they should be typed into SetUp from HP A-Z
Cartridges:
TMNSRMN 8 HELV 8 M7TMSRMN 8 No LGOTHIC - not proportional
TMNSRMN 10 HELV 10 M8ATMSRMN 8 No LINEDRW - not proportional

TMNSRMN 12I HELV 12I No PELITE - not proportional
TMNSRMN 14B HELV 14B
~
Page 57
As you can see, the selection is limited with older HP cartridges and is
nearly the same with 3rd party cartridges. You undoubtedly will want to
use something a little larger and distinctive. For that, you will have to
download soft fonts.
If the selections with the soft fonts above had been cartridge fonts in
Helvetica, it would appear like this:
#1-BNameCL......: HELV 14B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
#2-PNameCL AddC.: HELV 12B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
#3-AddL PhoDatCL: HELV 12B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
#4-PNameTitleCL.: HELV 10B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
#5-Letter Slogan: HELV 14B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
#6-ReturnPBName.: HELV 12B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:V
#7-ReturnAddress: HELV 10B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:V
#8-MailAddress..: HELV 12B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:V
#9-Envel Slogan.: HELV 12B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:V
Finding the properly orientated fonts on one cartridge is not always
possible, so you may need two cartridges inserted. Again, if your printer
can rotate fonts, it may be no problem.
Also note in the above example that only smaller cartridge fonts are avail-
able. The best work-around situation is to combine a cartridge with larger
soft fonts:
#1-BNameCL......: YOURFONT.XXX Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
#2-PNameCL AddC.: YOURFONT.XXX Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:""
#3-AddL PhoDatCL: HELV 14B Cartridge A-Z or "" if Soft Font:U
This type of mix using cartridge and soft fonts works very well with Laser
Letterhead Plus.
Third Party cartridges are a guessing game with Laser Letterhead plus.
Some work and some do not. They must be selected by name and cartridge
letter. If they are 100% compatible in this respect, they will work, but
many are not. If you are using a 3rd party cartridge and know you have the
font but cannot access it, that is because this cartridge is not utilizing
the same method to access áthe fonts that the HP cartridges use.
Presently we are reworking the third party cartridge selection method to
make them more compatible. A future upgrade of the program should include
better compatibility with these cartridges and in particular, those with
"designer" typefaces that are better suited to a letterhead. The new
HP Scalable fonts internal and in cartridges are part of PCL V and not
included in this program. Registered uses will have an add-on module
available that will include PCL V if they have LaserJet III compatibles.
~
Page 58
PCL bitmap soft fonts are the best with Laser Letterhead Plus. Almost all
will work with no problems. Most important is to have them in the same
directory as indicated in the EPATH statement in áthe LP.BAT file. Also,
you must spell the names correctly when you place them in the SetUp program.
And you must download them. If you forget to download, the program will take
a try at using cartridge or internal fonts (even scalable fonts), but they
will might not look right.
The crucial first pass through the printer: With soft fonts the program has
to go to the directory where they are located identify each font (it will
trust that you have downloaded the fonts), and then arrange the printer
layout during the first print run.
If you are using logos, images, or watermarks, it must also send these to
the printer. This takes anywhere from twenty seconds to a few minutes or so.
All print runs after the first go very quickly at the maximum speed of your
laser printer.
If you change the print layout, it will not delay printing: all print
options are in memory. If you change soft fonts, then you must download
and the first print run is again slow.
Most soft fonts are available in a typeface design more suited to a letter-
head than cartridge fonts, although much better cartridges are becoming
available. Some fonts that you would not use in anything else make good
letterhead fonts. Those that would appear silly in a written document are
often just what you need to customize a good business or personal
letterhead.
B. FontBank Cartridge - Pacific Data Products. Holds 1.5 megabytes of soft
fonts of your choice. You load yourself with bitmap or scalable fonts.
This cartridge works well with Laser Letterhead plus whether you load it
with scalable fonts or bitmap fonts. For bitmap fonts, install them into
SetUp just as you normally would do if you intended to download the fonts.
Also have the fonts located in a directory of your choice. Make sure that
directory is the same one you used during setup. If not, repeat setup, but
do not overwrite any files with the file ending "DAT". These are your data
files.
Next, install the FontBank Cartridge, using the same softfont directory.
You may install it for any application that is listed in the "Select
Source for Font List" window. It may be Windows, Word Perfect, or MS Word,
or any new applications Pacific Data Products may add. Make sure that the
font you are installing into the cartridge is in the directory that Laser
Letterhead plus uses. That font must also be in SetUp.
When using Laser Letterhead plus, do NOT download fonts. You do not have
to because they are already in the FontBank Cartridge. FontBank uses a
cartridge contents file that is identical to the way ESCAPE.FNT works with
Laser Letterhead plus. When you print a letterhead using fonts, Laser
Letterhead goes to the SetUp file and gets the font file. It next goes to
your soft font directory and asks ESCAPE.FNT for the file. ESCAPE.FNT finds
the file, gets all the specifications as to points, typeface, etc., and
sends them to your laser printer.
~
Page 59
Your laser will go through all the Internal fonts and cartridge fonts for
a font that matches the specifications sent to it by ESCAPE.FNT. It picks
the font that was loaded into the FontBank cartridge, and uses it. If you
place a bitmap font in SetUp that has the same scalable typeface loaded
into the Fontbank Cartridge, it will use that scalable typeface.
Laser Letterhead plus does not have to be one of those listed in FontBank's
setup program, because it uses its own font cartridge contents file. If it
cannot find a font with the exact specifications of the one in SetUp, it
will use any cartridge or internal, bitmap or scalable font, that comes
closest in its place.
C. Complete Font Library Cartridge - Pacific Data Products. This cartridge
contains 51 scalable outline typestyles for LaserJet III or IIID printers.
It contains CG Omega, CG Palacio, Cooper Black, Garamond, ITC Benguiat,
ITC Bookman, ITC Souvenir, ITC Zapf Dingbats, Letraset Revue Light, and
Shannon. Each comes in about 4 styles in light, bold, italic, and normal.
Used with the 1.5 Megabyte FontBank Cartridge, it rounds out your laser
with about 80-100 more scalable and bitmap fonts!
The process for using this cartridge is much the same as the FontBank
cartridge. See those instructions. The only thing you must do is place a
bitmap PCL soft font in Laser Letterhead plus' font directory as well as
in Laser Letterhead plus' SetUp, so ESCAPE.FNT may match it with one of
the scalable fonts in the Complete Font Library cartridge.
For instance, if you one of Eagle System's (PO Box 502, Moorpark, CA 93021)
excellent Souvenir bitmap typefaces in SetUp and place the Eagle System
font in the font directory, it will use that font's specs to use the
Souvenir font in the Complete Font Library Cartridge.
But you may also use Bitstream's University Roman typeface to get the same
Souvenir font from the cartridge as well. The reason why that combination
works, is because University Roman is not one of those in the Complete
Font Library Cartridge. It has similar specs, and is closer than any others
in the cartridge. In short, you could possibly use very different fonts to
use any of the typefaces in the Complete Font Library Cartridge. That sets
the stage for those who like to dicker around.
D. Other Cartridges - Any scalable typeface cartridge should work in a
similar manner as the Complete Font Library Cartridge. If you have a
scalable cartridge in your LaserJet III, IIIP, IIIsi, or compatible
printer, try the procedures as listed in B. and C. above. Also use the
particular typefaces listed in A. in SetUp (TMNSRMN 12, HELV 12) to call
up typefaces...Use "I" for internal font or a A-Z letter cartridge.
You will find that Laser Letterhead plus works well with scalable font
cartridges in this sort of hap-hazard font selection. That is because
PCL 5 uses better ground rules for selecting fonts than PCL 4 used with
bitmap fonts. Escape.FNT speaks its language and comes out better, even
when making a far-reaching guess.
We will come out with a module that will work better with most common
cartridges at a later date.

21. FILLING IN THE IMAGE FILE SETUP - SCREEN #3
===============================================================================
PRESS <FUNCTION KEY F10> TO VIEW YOUR PCX IMAGES. You MUST keep PCX files
in the CURRENT directory with all program files. Do not place them with
the font files or any other directory. If you do, you will receive an error
when you print a document or a letterhead. All PCX images must have a *.PCX
file ending. LLHP searches the current directory for files ending with PCX.
This setup screen will list every image (logos and/or watermarks) that you
are using of each type of letterhead up to a maximum of 16 image files:
1.Regular Computer Generated Letterhead - Business and Personal...4 images
2.Only Logo User Generated Letterhead - Business and Personal.....6 images
3.Special User Designed Letterhead - Business and Personal.......6 images
Total images.....................................................16 images
A total of 16 images are not actually needed unless you used a different
image for each entry. In most cases the same watermark could be used for
each business letterhead style, the same logo, and so on. Three or four
images may be used repetitiously for all 16 images resulting in a variety
of letterhead styles. However, should you a need for individual designs,
all 16 different images could be obtained at low cost upon registration.
-> It may also be noted that you may use any PCX image. Here lies a
challenge for creativity. Should you prefer to add a sketch or scenic view,
many commercial sources supply images. AN EXCELLENT SUPPLIER OF IMAGES ARE
YOUR SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTORS. They may be altered in most Paint programs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About PCX Files and How They are Used in This Program
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About PCX images: The PCX format is a "bitmap" format which describes your
image as a rectangle of black and white dots. The advantage of using this
format is that the files can be relatively small in most cases, and take up
little diskspace. You may also load PCX files into pixel editing programs
like PC Paintbrush for modification.
PCX images are only a disadvantage if you have limited laser printer RAM.
At print time, the program downloads the selected images to the printer.
After printing, they are deleted without disturbing the font files.
The larger "watermark" file may cover an entire page, but it has very low
resolution. A file this size in 300 dpi could require a megabyte of space.
As a watermark, the resolution is cut down to 1% to 5% of the original to
create the watermark effect and it rarely runs over 35 or 36K. This is
about the size of a mid-sized font file.
Printing this file takes longer than other PCX files, but only because it
encompasses a greater area on the page. PCX images could take a long time
to print, but every PCX print routine for every single image in this
program is written in fast assembler to speed up the process. After the
first pass through the printer, it usually takes only 20% of the original
time.
~
Page 61
Use PCX files that have been created in the same size as you will use
in Laser Letterhead plus. If you enlarge a bitmap on the page, you
will lose resolution and the "jaggies" will become apparent. Loss of
resolution also means loss of definition, and some lines break apart. This
tends to make the image "fuzzy" and lighter than normal.
If you want an image lighter to use as a background graphic or as a water-
mark, do it in a program that first creates it as a vector image. Vector
images are mathematical formulations that produce smooth enlargements and
clear unbroken separations if you decrease the density. After the image
is reduced to the exact printing size, then convert it to a PCX image.
Shrinking a PCX image may cause excess darkening in areas of the bitmap
that are not desirable. Small detail is lost and may appear as a black and
white "freckled" spot. It is easy to shrink a bitmap, so that normal vision
will have difficulty making out any detail at all.
You may also find that some bitmap images will not respond to scaling or
changing their size. If they have been "fixed" or transformed in some
manner, or some of the graphic information is missing, you may not be able
change them in any manner.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Make Entries into the Numerical Field Positions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the KEY PAD (Num Lock On) or TOP ROW KEYS, whichever you like:
Type in a number, for instance 1.25" for 1 1/4", by striking the "1" key,
then the "." or decimal point, and then the "2" and "5". NOTE WHAT HAPPENS:
a. Striking the "1" CLEARS THE FIELD of all previous numbers.
b. Striking the "." decimal, FIXES THE DECIMAL PLACE. The field is set up
so that the next numbers will fall into their proper decimal places!
c. Strike the "2" and then the "5". DONE! Trailing and leading zeros are
automatically added, if needed.
You need not enter the location down to the last decimal place. The program
will, however, carry your decimals out exactly to the pixel. Pixels, or the
dots on the paper, are what the program actually uses. Do not be alarmed if
you come back to the screen and the measurement is carried out to the 3rd
decimal place.
~
Page 62
Horizontal and Vertical location is in inches. Forget about the columns and
rows that you usually use when printing with the computer, and decide where
you want something on a page by horizontal and vertical coordinates. Ignore
the fact that you have your laser configured with so many lines per inch.
The program will take over all control panel settings and will make it easy
for you. When done, all will be reset exactly as it was.
The only other thing you must remember is that the HORIZONTAL (Hor)
measurement is from LEFT MARGIN to the RIGHT. The VERTICAL (Ver) measure-
ment is from the TOP MARGIN DOWN. The intersection of Hor and Ver is the
exact location on the page. Make sure all locations are on the printed page
or you will get a printing error.
It is unnecessary to discuss each image position, since all are done in a
similar manner, but each having a different location. The following is how
the screen appears set up in inches with PCX images entered:
Regular Letterhead Logo - Business and Personal - 4 Image Files:
01-Business Logo:LITELOGO.PCX Position Hor: 3.365 inches Ver: 0.224 inches
02-Bus Watermark:WM_AERO.PCX Position Hor: 1.496 inches Ver: 2.617 inches

11-Bus Logo #1 :ZEPSEAL.PCX Position Hor: 0.187 inches Ver: 0.000 inches
12-Bus Logo #2 :MOTTO.PCX Position Hor: 0.187 inches Ver: 0.383 inches
13-Bus Watermrk :WM_AERO.PCX Position Hor: 1.496 inches Ver: 2.716 inches
14-Per Logo #1 :JQFFRAME.PCX Position Hor: 0.187 inches Ver: 0.000 inches
15-Per Logo #2 :TINYJOHN.PCX Position Hor: 3.552 inches Ver: 1.421 inches
16-Per Watermrk:WM_MUSIC.PCX Position Hor: 0.187 inches Ver: 1.496 inches
So as to understand which logos are printing, use a top down system:
Logo #1 in the Only Logo letterhead is generally the letterhead logo,
Logo #2 is a logo that prints a motto further down on the page. You could
arrange these any way you like, but it would be difficult at print time to
be able to determine which logos to select if you did not have a standard
order.

22. Filling in Laser Graphics and Text SetUp - Screen #4
===============================================================================
This screen covers the letterhead text and the graphical baseline or
drawing, excluding the slogan (found on Screen #1). As you may remember,
the baseline is the line drawn under the letterhead text. This line may be
expanded to other forms or even a box, depending of which letterhead is
being printed. Laser graphics do not use laser printer memory other than
the commands that are in program code. They are built into your printer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regular Letterhead - Select Type Baseline or Box-in Letterhead:
01-Baseline Design or Box Frame Type:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE FIELDS SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The letter that is completely computer designed, is the Regular Letterhead.
You may, however, select the type of letterhead you want designed for you.
The letterhead is centered or grouped at the left margin, a decision for
either type is made at print-time. You have ten types of baselines or boxes
that may be drawn under or around the letterhead:
0=None No baseline or box around it, only the letterhead text.
1-- A simple thin line under the text.
2== A double line under the text.
3... A dotted line under the text.
4--Box A single line box drawn around the text with no shading
5==Box A double line box drawn around the text with no shading
6...Box A dotted line box drawn around the text with no shading
7Shade Box A no border shaded box around the text
8--Shade Box A single line shaded box around the text
9==Shade Box A double line shaded box around the text
10..Shade Box A dotted line shaded box around the text
The gray-shading in the box is specified in 0% to 100%, from white to solid
black. A white box would be the same as a no shading box, and a black box
would obliterate all text: it is unlikely that you would want to do that.
Rather than having the program limit shading to, for instance, 80%, the
user may exercise his own judgment. Usually 8% to 15% is light shading,
16% to 35% is the medium shading, and all above that is considered dark
shading. Fill patterns and graphics are available only in the Special
Design Letterhead below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only Logo Letterhead - Position the PNameTitle and Date:
02-03 PNameTitle Horizontal and Vertical Positions
04-05 Date Horizontal and Vertical Positions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The only text that is not a PCX image on the Only Logo Letterhead is the
PNameTitle or personal name and business title, and the date. You may place
this text anywhere on the printed page or/and within the image letterhead.
~
Page 64
either of these anywhere on the page, or even embedded within a logo. The
date may be centered automatically on horizontal plane by placing 99.999
in that position.
Text placement uses the same type coordinates as placing a logo. Enter both
horizontal and vertical positions that intersect at the left-most edge of
the left-most letter in the character string. You will probably have to
estimate the first measurement, since you may not know exactly how long the
character string will be. As you will find out, most first measurements
require an adjustment or fine tuning.
Place both the PNameTitle and date as close to where you want them to be as
possible.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Design Letterhead - Position Letterhead Text and Select Graphics:
06-Letterhead Body Text: 1=Manually Set Left Margin 2=Automatically Centered
07-Business Text Left Marg:1.309 in. 08-Personal Text Left Marg: 1.683 in.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The Special Design Letterhead is partially computer generated and partially
user constructed. The computer handles the letterhead text placement,
including LEADING (pronounced "led'-ing", the space between the lines of
type), and KERNING, (the space between letters). The user is able to move
the body of letterhead text on the horizontal plane by setting the co-
ordinates for the left margin. The left margin is located by an invisible
line running down the left-most edge of the left-most letter on the left
side of the text.
The first decision that has to be made is whether to center the text, or
manually set the left margin. You would center the text if, for instance,
you placed a lighter background logo behind the text in the center of the
page. A movable margin is wanted, however, if you prefer to move the text
to the right to make room for a logo to the left of the text in the 0.000
horizontal and 0.000 vertical area (the topmost left position on the page).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
09-Base 0=None 1- 2= 3.. 4=Heavy Black Line 5=Gray Shade Bar 6=Pattern Bar:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The base is a line or bar under letterhead text. Select type base first:
0 - no base
1-- single thin line under the text
2== double line
3... dotted line
4== heavy black line
5= gray shaded bar with or without single, double, dotted line border
6= pattern bar with or without single, double, dotted line border
~

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10-Type Bar Pattern Design 0=none 1-line 2|vert 3/angle 4\angle 5#box 6weave
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
If you had chosen a single, double, dotted line, or heavy black bar above,
they are unaffected by the pattern bar selection. But you should also
select a pattern design bar, in the event you switch over to it. The
pattern bar selection requires the following selection of patterns:
0 - no pattern - will create framed blank bar if bar border chosen
1-- closely spaced parallel horizontal lines
2|vert closely spaced parallel vertical lines
3/angle closely spaced parallel lines on a 45 degree angle
4\angle closely spaced parallel lines - opposite 45 degree angle
5#box closely spaced vertical and horizontal lines - box effect
6weave closely spaced intersecting 45 degree angle lines - woven effect
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-% Bar Shading 0-100 12-Type Bar Border 0=None 1-- 2== 3...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The percent bar shading will apply to the gray shade bar in #09. If you did
not select it, place a desirable shade such as 15 for light shading or 50
for darker shading. This is an interesting selection because you can create
a plain white bar by selecting 0 or a solid black bar (wider that the heavy
black bar above).
The selection of the bar border may create more interesting effects. This
border will apply to both the shaded bar or pattern bar. THE EFFECTS
GRAPHICALLY OF PUTTING NO BORDER AROUND THE BAR CREATES AN ENTIRELY
DIFFERENT TYPE BAR OR PATTERN! This is one you can play around with.
There is no way that this Handbook can show you this, using an ASCII text
file print out. You must try these different graphics to have any idea of
what they will look like.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13-Total Length of Base
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
Select the length of the base. If the base is to go from left margin to
right margin, it will be over 7.6" long. If a shorter line is used, it
should be centered. You may do this by adjusting the horizontal position.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14-Rotate Base to Vertical? Y=1 N=2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS ENTRY SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
~
Page 66
If preferred, you may swing the base bar around to a vertical bar. This
creates an entirely different letterhead design. Be aware, however,
of what happens to a graphic fill pattern when it is rotated to the
vertical.
1. The graphic fill patterns chosen for horizontal bar will not "rotate"
with the bar...they are stationary, much like a grid over the page. If you
had chosen a design such as 1-- closely spaced parallel horizontal lines,
turning the bar upright will leave the lines still on the horizontal plane.
2. You will now have a COLUMN of short parallel horizontal lines running
down the page (the lines do not rotate, but the bar does). It is quite
a good effect, but may not be what you wanted. If you want closely spaced
vertical lines running down the page, you must select 2|vert above.
This is true ONLY for the graphic fill patterns. The single line, double
line, dotted line, heavy black line, or shaded bars: these are not graphic
fill patterns. Graphic fill patterns are selected in #09 above, choosing
#6 Pattern Bar.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15-Base Horizontal Position 16-Base Vertical Position
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The horizontal and vertical positions have slightly different meaning if
baseline has been rotated to an upright vertical line or bar.
As a horizontal line or bar, the vertical measurement is from top margin
down to the intersect of the horizontal position. The line or bar starts
at that position and may go to the right margin.
|Vertical = distance from top margin
|
Horizontal-----|############# <--- Bar----> length may be specified.
distance from Right end with border will be
left margin clipped off if length too long.
starts the Shorten length until end of bar
bar or line. or border can be seen.
As a vertical column (or line), however, the horizontal and vertical are
lined up in this manner, with a column that goes down the page vertically:
|Vertical = distance from top margin
| starts the vertical column.
Horizontal-----| The 00.000 vertical position would
distance from ## place the top of bar at the top margin.
left margin. ##
##
##<--- Bar is now a column that may go to bottom margin
or as long as you specify. Making it too long will
cause it to be cut off at the bottom margin. If you
have a border around its edge, you should decrease
the length of the bar until bottom border is printed.
~
Page 67
As a horizontal bar (or line), the HORIZONTAL position marks the
beginning of the bar. To move the bar and center it on the page, you
adjust the HORIZONTAL position. To move the bar up or down on the page,
you adjust the VERTICAL position. If bar is too long or too short, change
the length of the bar with #13-Total length of Base.
As a vertical column (bar or line), the VERTICAL position marks the
beginning of the column. If the VERTICAL position is set at 00.000 or the
top margin, it may be 10.375" long (if you are using 8.5" by 11" paper).
Making the bar too long will cause it to be cut off prematurely at the
bottom of the page. REMEMBER, if a border is selected, the bottom edge of
the border will not print and you will have to shorten length of the bar.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17-PNameTitle Horizontal Position: 18-PNameTitle Vertical Position
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The personal name and business title on the business version may be placed
anywhere on the page, or embedded within the letterhead. Including this
line on the page is a print-time decision.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19-Date Horizontal Position 20-Date Vertical Position
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
The date always has an automatic centering option by placing 99.999 in the
horizontal position. This will center the date at any vertical position on
the page. If you wish, however, you may insert it inside the letterhead or
place it anywhere on the page. Inclusion of the date on the letterhead is
a print-time decision.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Envelope: 21-Return Address Hor Pos:0.000 Ver Pos:0.000 22-Baseline-BarType:
Select 0=None 1- 2= 3.. 4=Heavy Black Line 5=Gray Shade Bar 6=Pattern Bar:

23-% Bar Shading 0-100 24-Type Bar Border 0=None 1-- 2== 3...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THESE ENTRIES SHOULD NOT BE LEFT BLANK
If your laser is printing the Return Address off the envelope, use #21 to
line it up. Not all lasers print in exactly the same position. You may use
the Hor and Ver positions to place the return address exactly where you
want it. Make this adjustment only when you change laser printers.
The envelope baseline selections are the same as the letter selections. You
may therefore select an envelope baseline that is the same or different from
your letter selection. Using the baseline on the envelope is a print-time
decision. The Shareware Edition does not support and upright baseline on the
envelope.

23. How to Place Soft Fonts into a Directory of Your Choice
===============================================================================
NOTE: The INSTALL program will place the font path information into the
LP.BAT file automatically. You may place soft fonts on any drive/directory
of your choice. If you change the location of your soft fonts after the
installation of the program, you must either reinstall the program, or
change the LP.BAT file to indicate the drive and directory where the soft
font files are located.
At startup or at download time, Laser Letterhead plus looks into the file
LP.BAT to find the location of the font directory and other necessary
information. LP.BAT is the file that calls up the program, and contains
this SET instruction:
SET EPATH=C:\LETTER
This statement specifies "C" as the drive and "LETTER" as the directory
where the soft fonts are kept.
Using EDLIN (DOS' Editor), an Editor, or word processor in non-document
or ASCII mode, call up LP.BAT and change the "C" drive to the drive where
you are keeping the fonts. Then change "LETTER" to the appropriate
directory.
DO NOT USE A WORD PROCESSOR TO DO THIS UNLESS IT IS IN A MODE THAT WILL
CALL UP AN ASCII FILE WITHOUT ALTERING ITS STRUCTURE. AN ASCII FILE
CONTAINS NO UNSEEN CONTROL KEYSTROKES OR OTHER MARKINGS THAT WILL BE READ
BY LASER LETTERHEAD plus.
Then, copy the file ESCAPE.FNT into the same file where your fonts are
located and also leave a copy in with the program files. This file contains
information for reading and decoding font files.
That is all you have to do. Make sure you have the correct font files in
SetUp and restart the program. If you are making this change from the
DOS Shell on the Main Menu, you will have to restart the program and let
it go through its initial search for locating the fonts. Exit the program
by selecting "Q>uit" at the Main Menu, and then restart by typing LP at
the DOS prompt. Always start the program with the LP command. The program
needs to read the LP.BAT file to locate the soft fonts.
DO NOT CHANGE ANY OTHER STATEMENTS IN THE LP.BAT FILE.
The next section handles error codes generated by the program. Formerly
this Handbook listed HP LaserJet II-III codes. This has been omitted since
all of these are in your printer manuals and they will differ if you are
using a LaserJet II compatible. The most familiar of the LaserJet codes is
ERROR 20 for RAM overflow. Most printers have a similar error code. This
error may stop the printer, but it does no harm. When RAM is full, the
printer will only print what has accumulated to that point. If you have
the printer set to stop on all errors, it will generally require that you
press a switch to start it again. See your individual printer manuals for
these instructions.

===============================================================================
24. Error Codes
===============================================================================
1. Downloading:
Total Downloaded Fonts = 8
Font #1 BNameCl: ABC240IH.HPF Not Downloaded - Check Spelling, Location
After Viewing, Press <ENTER> to Exit
Check to see that your fonts are PCL bitmap fonts. Others will not work.
When downloading, you will be told if all fonts were downloaded to a
printer. The program cannot determine with any degree of accuracy if
if it was a Laser Printer, since there are no standards for printers
to identify themselves. The error message will tell how many fonts
were successfully downloaded and also will display those fonts that
were not downloaded.
If it is more than one font, the display will slowly rotate from one
font to another. You may leave this on your screen as long as needed,
and strike <ENTER> when you want it removed.
Examine your soft font directory and see if all fonts are there. Most
important, check the spelling of the font name. Look for problems of
mistaken identity: the alphabetical "L" and numerical "one", as well
as numerical "zero" and alphabetical "o".
If all is correct, check the SET EPATH statement in the LP.BAT file.
It should read:
SET EPATH=C:\LETTER
C is the drive on where the fonts are located, and LETTER is the name
of the directory. Both of these may be any drive or directory, but they
must contain the soft fonts AND the file ESCAPE.FNT. Note that the only
SPACE in the SET EPATH statement is between the "T" and "E" separating
the words "SET" and "EPATH". No other spaces are permitted. There is
a BACK SLASH "\" and NOT a forward slash "/"after "C:".
If all this is correct, then check out the soft font by switching it
with one that downloads to your printer properly. It cannot be a
PostScript font or one that only works only in a certain program. If
it is an ordinary PCL bitmap soft font it should work properly.
2. Print time error message: Orientation Wrong
This means that you have placed a portrait font, for example, in a
position for a landscape font. Downloading cannot give this error since
it does not know how you are going to use the font. Correct the
problem, and all should go well. Printers that rotate fonts may not
always do so. Make sure that landscape fonts are used if you are getting
this error when your printer is supposed to rotate a portrait font to
a landscape font. Not all fonts may respond to your printer,s rotation.
~
Page 70
3. Print time error message: Invalid Feed Method
You have specified a feed method that your laser printer cannot
utilize, or you are using a laser printer that is not totally
compatible with the HP Series II and III PCL Level IV language.
In either case, switch the feed method and try all options.
4. Start up or run error: OPEN ERROR ????.file.
A file is missing that the program is trying to open. Make sure by
visually examining and counting all files. Reinstall the program if
you must. Make sure the no file has a size of zero bytes. This means
that file has been damaged. Reinstall any missing or damaged files.
5. Out of Memory (or) Not Enough Memory
The batch file LP.BAT file is not being used to start the program.
The reason there is an LP.BAT file is so SET files can set up the envir-
onment and other files can provide the correct conditions for Memory
Management. Print and download functions will not locate soft fonts.
6. Memory Manager Errors:
Memory Manager Errors generally occur when switching between large
modules and a portion of the program is being placed into expanded
or extended memory. They may also occur if the program has a problem
writing to the disk or LP.BAT was not used. The error suggests a remedy.
